I seem to remember reading some where that HD TV doesn't work with FreeView. If that's the case, none of the shops i've been into seem to mention it.

HDTV doesn't work with anything unless you have an HDTV decoder.

Freeview doesn't broadcast any HDTV signals at all, so even with a decoder you can't see anything in HDTV on Freeview.

Sky do broadcast a limited number of HDTV programs, but to see them you will need both the standard SKY box plus an HDTV decoder.

You may have noticed that none of the above is exactly advertised in any shop on the High Street. TV's are shown to be "HDTV ready". Ready for the point when you have bought a decoder, and then there are HD channels being broadcast.

In the same way that most TV sets now include a Freeview decoder, in 12-18months time they will also include an HDTV decoder.

just a MSE tip but unless you have a small room or realy need a telly now i would recon you are best waiting for the tech to settle down. i purposfully bought a second hand sony 44" rear projector (£280) because every generation of panels gets better and cheaper. the prices of displays have dropped more than i paid for my telly and when i do buy its likely the new panels will have better quality outputs, and likely higher resolutions.

fyi if anyone cares ebuyer were punting 42" lcds for 599, when you think you could pay that kind of cash for a 15" screen a few years back it just shows how much of this tech is financing the r&d costs.

you will end up waiting forever, because when the price is at a more reasonable level the next in-thing will be out, so you'll wait for that instead.....on so the story goes on...its the same for PCs. You have to accept that whatever you buy techie wise will out of date before youve opened the box!

Not true, but used to be. HDTV ready lcd TVs are currently being shipped by the boat load from China. Where each obscure make is priced down by omitting anything that doesn't affect the size of the screen. So, the first thing to go is sound quality. Next, the processing power of the freeview electrics. Next, the connectivity. Whoops, forgot to mention the lcd screen quality.

I agree, don't wait forever. But as we speak, you get what you pay for. Currently a basic Toshiba 26" costs around £100 quid more than the cheapest set of the same size. But it's easily worth the extra.

Hmmmm, don't know that I agree either. When I bought my computer, it had the first DVD burner included. It cost a whopping £999. The basic models out there now, even spending £500 are far better per se than what was on the market years ago.

Flat screen plasmas' were £12,500 once!! So in a few years a decent TV will be about £199.
NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!

    I completely agree.

I've been reading threads like this for over a year, pondering whether to go for one of these "bargain LCD HD TVs".

Well, i'm definitely pleased that I have held on. Whilst there arguably hasn't been enough HD stuff broadcast to justify getting an HDTV, the technology has improved a lot over that period.

If you look at a TV like this Panasonic TX-32LXD700 it has a spec that is way ahead of anything else around at the moment and far improved on last years stuff. For me, as long as there's a model like it on the streets I won't be able to bring myself to get something half as decent - whether it's cheapo or not.
