What do you mean by "messes up" the board; I'm sure it doesn't affect any other compers who enter as I do. I do wonder how it affects people at all.
It is true that if you enter the moment they are posted it will not make a difference.
If you enter in the order they are posted but can only do so every few hours or any other way where you do not hit them at the time they are posted it makes a difference.
There are more posts to read on the bumped thread in case there is something relevant in the extra ones and that is just a waste of time in most cases.
When you are comping from the start to cover back to where you had got to a few hours ago it can mean scanning through 5 or 6 pages of posts when it would be just 2 or 3 without all the bumped posts in there.
Neither of these should take much time but it is a difference.0 -
I have tried my very best to stay out of this nightmare, but I have to just get it off my chest, so can I just say...
SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Emmap I think I'll jump off that cliff with ya!I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apology
THIS IS ME!
When you talk down to others it says more about you than them.0 -
Sorry to butt in here but I have a question.
The bump on the fur comp. PurpleX's comment in my opinion was mainly to highlight that she believed that the prize contained real fur (I know there has been some debate whether this was the case). I think many people would have missed this in the original post and therefore this was a relevant point to make. A similar issue may arise if there was a comp for sausages and someone pointed out they were vegetarian sausages for example.
I know PurpleX then gave her opinion on the fur issue (fair enough everyone has a view but not strictly relevant to the comp - sorry PurpleX I don't mean to suggests your views are irrelevant).
So my question is this:
If the post had simply said 'to clarify it appears to be real fur' and no opinion given would this have made the post ok?
It's people seem to keep saying that the opinion on fur wasn't relevant but to me this wasn't the primary concern of the post instead it was to highlight a specific part of the prize which make affect people's decision to enter.
Edit: a similar example might be if someone added specific terms and conditions or location and then said oh and thanks for the comp OP0 -

If you use the "sorted by" feature though and sort by "thread start time" then the bumped threads will not show in the list. I rarely enter as they are posted, I'm usually miles behind, I think it was 100 pages behind a few days ago, I think I'm down to about 45 now, I will get there in the end.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

Very well explained!
A similar example would be a comp offering a prize like cooking sauces, and then someone replying with "these aren't suitable for vegetarians'.:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -

I wouldn't argue with them except maybe the opinion on one of the prizes although as junk calls can be an issue with compers I don't know.0 -

Just my thoughts but when I click on a comp iand it has a post saying "please do not bump" I find this way more irrating then reading a quick post whether it saying thank you or some new information.
I don't understand why anyone needs to be stalking the forum on the lookout for bumped threads just to insult and embarrass the poster, we are all here for the same purpose so lets just get on with our own comping and try to remember we were all newbies once upon a time!!!
P.S I quite enjoy reading the odd post here and there, reminds me we are all human and not a bunch of robots sat behind a computer :rotfl:
Having been at the beginning of the debate, it's interesting to see how it's developed.
The above rationale is one of the reasons I posted. I don't generally bite, but putting a smiley on a don't bump comment doesn't make it any politer and I thought the don't bump was unfair. Plus, as others have said, i dont care if people post the odd comment. life really is too short. It happened to be luckyone who was the trigger, it could just have easily been someone else. It's meant to be a hobby. A bit of fun with the odd prize if you're lucky. It's a public forum, we're not back at school, and its suddenly all getting a bit too authoritarian.
Anyone who is taking it so seriously they pounce on the slightest "misdemeanour" possibly needs to reconsider their perspectives.
I know this debate has been had many times, but I suspect the enthusiastic don't bumpers are just a vocal minority.
Although if banning people for bumping gets taken seriously then I really will know that the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
Edit- anyone who wishes to take offence at the last sentence, be my guest. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I also comp from main board and work my way back to where I left off last time but I can't see why bumping causes such a problem if you comp that way.
When i've worked my way back, if I see a ticked/crossed thread that has no other replies then that's where I know i'm finished and go back to the start again, if it has replies then there may be newer comps after it and it only takes a few seconds to check.
I can understand "Please don't bump" if multiple people are doing it/chatting/repeating that a comp isn't working in the thread but when it's a single post I find it more irritating than the "unnecessary" bump.0 -
So my question is this:
If the post had simply said 'to clarify it appears to be real fur' and no opinion given would this have made the post ok?
Not to me unless further information had been obtained - there is no reason to be pointing out what was already in the original post it's up to people to read and decide themselves if they wish to enter a competition.
(I have an expectation that fur should be real unless it says otherwise so a bump to say it is faux and not real fur might have been ok)0
