TV Tax

The law requires you to pay a TV licence if you watch live broadcasting. The fact that you watch only channels on the internet and never watch the BBC is completely irrelevant. You don't have to believe me. Google the Communications Act 2003.
How is it irrelevant?
The TV license is for maintanace of the transmitting equiptment.....wich the internet does not use, hence why the op does not have to pay the tax,0 -
That's an absurd argument, and you know it. Should childless people be able to opt out of paying taxes that contribute to the education budget? My mum is registerered blind, should she be able to opt out of paying the proportion of council tax that is spent on street lighting? Taken to the extreme, if I 'never get ill', why should I pay for the NHS?
The law says that if you watch live broadbcast TV, then you need a TV licence. Nothing to do with the BBC channels.
How is it obsurd?
If you do not drive why should you pay road tax? You can ride a bike with no tax.
Stick a motor on the bike and you pay tax,
Same difference.0 -

Although this arguement has nothing to do with the TV tax, yes I think I should be able to opt out of education taxes. I have made the choice not to have screaming kids of my own and I'm fed up of paying for everyone else's. Your Mum should have a free TV licence since she can't see the TV. The fact that blind people have to pay anything at all to the BBC is absurd! MSE Martin has put the arguement straight on the main page I'm glad he has finally made what some people have known for years available to the mainstream via MSE. The BBC would rather you didn't know the facts about what you do and don't need a licence for and twist the truth using misleading language in their PR bumf.0 -

Overseen by BBC Worldwide Board member, Marcus Arthur, the UK and ANZ territory looks to grow the BBC brand, drive future business opportunities and develop new revenue streams in these major markets.
In the UK, the business has a strong consumer products presence, creating digital downloads and physical products such as DVDs, merchandise, books and music CDs, in order to extend our audiences' enjoyment of our key programmes and brands. Similarly, our Live Entertainment business is managed by the UK team and offers audiences at home and abroad the chance to watch some of their favourite brands transformed into a live event - from a UK tour of Strictly Come Dancing to a global Walking with Dinosaurs live arena show.
The UK also has a digital retail outlet in the BBC Shop where audiences can buy a range of product including exclusive BBC-branded merchandise. As consumers become more comfortable with transactions over the internet, e-commerce will become an increasingly important source of revenue for the UK team.
The Magazines Unit in the UK oversees 17 licensed magazines that have a BBC genre or programme connection and ensures that their content is of the highest quality because of their association with the BBC brand, while a small programming sales team negotiate deals with broadcasters from across the UK and Ireland, selling programmes from BBC Worldwide's extensive programming catalogue in traditional or digital format.
The UK territory also manages a portfolio of 10 hugely successful television channels through UKTV, a joint venture with Scripps Networks Interactive. This network portfolio, which attracts around 40 million viewers each week, includes channel brands such as Dave, GOLD and Eden, available to viewers across terrestrial, cable and satellite"
And that's just a small part of the operation! Its time to make the BBC encrypted to only those who want to pay for it. They already are a commericial organisation which has got too big0 -
I'm not wishing to go off topic too much, but if people were able to opt out of paying specific taxes in the way that you describe it would lead to a situation where only the rich could afford education and health care. Should you also be able to opt out of paying towards the Defence Budget because you aren't a soldier?MiserlyMartin wrote: »Although this arguement has nothing to do with the TV tax, yes I think I should be able to opt out of education taxes. I do agree with your point about blind people having to pay for a TV license.0 -
If only Maggie were still in charge, she would have flogged off the left leaning Guardian reading BBC to that nice Mr Murdoch. No more TV tax, just part of the entertainment mix on Sky. Of course Freeview and Freesat would also have to become subscription based. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Road tax was abolished in 1937. VED is based on emissions and does not fund the road network. If you do not drive why should you pay road tax? You can ride a bike with no tax.

Motoring taxation is made up of two elements, vehicle excise duty (VED), which can be considered a tax on ownership, and fuel duty, which is a tax on use. Although historically the road fund tax was considered a hypothecated tax to pay for the building and maintenance of the road network, this has not been so since 1937 and it is now a general revenue raising tax. Changes to the rates and coverage of the duty are made in the Finance Acts. The Labour Government introduced a new system of VED, based primarily on carbon dioxide emissions, for cars registered on and after 1 March 20010 -
The TV licence should be funded through general taxation. It's ridiculous that you can be considered a criminal for not buying a TV licence.0

There is no reason to have a state broadcaster, the BBC should be privatised. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

So instead of £13 per month tax you have a £70 per month tax. Yes, that makes sense. If only Maggie were still in charge, she would have flogged off the left leaning Guardian reading BBC to that nice Mr Murdoch. No more TV tax, just part of the entertainment mix on Sky. Of course Freeview and Freesat would also have to become subscription based.0
