The reason is to comply with the law. You may choose to decide which laws you will and won't obey of course and one day with luck you will be caught and fined.
What law is there that says i must pay for somthing i do not use. I don't have a car, so i do not pay tax, insurance for a car.
Your odd!0 -

The law requires you to pay a TV licence if you watch live broadcasting. The fact that you watch only channels on the internet and never watch the BBC is completely irrelevant. You don't have to believe me. Google the Communications Act 2003.0 -
I have no idea how anyone could ever catch me not watching telly. Or are they now installing software on my laptop to tell if I've been to the BBC website? The reason is to comply with the law. Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I have no doubt that the BBC website will know the address of your computer from your visits to it."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

That's an absurd argument, and you know it. Should childless people be able to opt out of paying taxes that contribute to the education budget? My mum is registerered blind, should she be able to opt out of paying the proportion of council tax that is spent on street lighting? Taken to the extreme, if I 'never get ill', why should I pay for the NHS?
The law says that if you watch live broadbcast TV, then you need a TV licence. Nothing to do with the BBC channels. No free lunch, and no free laptop

That's not the argument, though.
The argument is this: if someone legally avoids paying a particular tax by arranging their affairs in the necessary way, then what justification is there for criticising them for it?
And, as a supplementary issue, why does it seem like people are more likely to criticise someone who does not need a TV licence, compared to say those who do not need to pay Road Tax?0 -

So you are happy about Starbucks, Amazon, eBay, and other companies merrily getting away with paying very little tax in this country are you?"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. I'm sure they do but an IP address doesn't equal a street address.poppasmurf_bewdley wrote: »I have no doubt that the BBC website will know the address of your computer from your visits to it.:footie:

But the examples given are "discretionary". No broadcast receiving equipment (ie. television, set-top box, DVD or hard disc recorder), no Broadcast Receiving licence. No vehicle, no Vehicle Excise Duty.
Of course, all it needs is for the internet to be designated as a broadcast medium. If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?
