Its hard isn't it? Try buying just one extra item a week. A tin of tomatoes, packet of pasta (value if you have to), pack of mince for the freezer. Put aside an item if you have a bogof deal. If you use one of the reward supermarkets keep the points handy for such a situation.
I recently realised that we would be up the creek if we didn't get paid when expected or the banks system goes down. So this is what I try to do. Not always possible but I try to keep a little cash on me as well.
Op, you have been treated really badly, sometimes you just have to show them you will not take it.
