I've been given the opportunity to sack someone!

I was asked this morning whether they should give the other PA notice (she's working in Brighton) and I said I was happy here. So, in essence, 'Yes, fire her'.

I don't like being put in that position. It makes me feel really mercenary. Eventually I would like more supervisory status but that's a rude awakening.

Cycling today - 80 minutes on the money again. The weather continues to be good; I'm interested to see how much of a difference a rainy or windy day will have. The more time out of the car the better. Last night's commute was horrific again, 76 minutes and I was late to pick up my daughter. Don't want to make that a habit. Another 'two wheels good' moment.

Got to shovel in some muesli!

    Hi,

It takes time to settle into a new job - those first few days when you have to ask where the loos are, try and remember names and figure out the office politics are a nightmare! It WILL get better though, and as for having to make the tough decisions... there's a very good reason why people with that kind of responsibility get paid more!

In terms of the commuting time - could you maybe get a motorbike/moped for some days? Zipping through the queues of traffic, but without the effort of pedalling!

I've been looking at getting a moped. £100 seems to be the starter price for getting one used. My wife has been looking into it for me ... and is looking for one that looks awful so it won't be nicked. (Kind of like the "Chameleon", a car from a comedy show in America, which looked like a crap 70s car but had all mod cons inside.)

I might be able to afford that soon. I should piggybank for it, and also for my citizenship. Always something to save for in the interim, like a new PAYG mobile too.

I have a scooter and it's fantastic! It takes me 10 minutes to get to work - in a car it takes at least 30 minutes!

However, if you're doing much more than 10/15 miles a day, I would reccommend you get something bigger than a 50cc like mine. The engine would stand up better to the wear and tear.

You also need to look into whether you can ride it on your car licence or if you have to do CBT and a bike licence. The government have been steadily changing legislation about this. If you passed your test before 1999 you can ride a 50cc on a full car licence. If you passed after then, you have to do a CBT before you can ride on the road and then a full bike licence within 2 years.

I was looking into the CBT and the full-on test - since the commute is about 42 miles per day I thought that a 125cc might be the better option.

Although in all my dealings with motorcycles I have to say that the bigger the engine, the quieter they are. I like quiet vehicles. Which is why I'm going to get rich and buy a Tango electric car, like George Clooney has. :p

    A man can dream.

I found a local pool near work, but it's £3 for a swim and I would have to leave the house by 5:45am on car days. I'd need to be uber-organised to make that happen, and not on a temp's salary.

Eventually, once a week swims could be one of my little treats. I miss swimming a lot. Just as long as it's not for tri - I don't do that anymore ... well, maybe ... if it doesn't get in the way of life ... and doesn't cost too much ... ya da ya da ya da

Today is a test of the train journey back home. I rode in today again, 78 minutes this time. It should be £4.90 ... and I should be able to put the bike on the train.

The only difference is that I've been offered the chance of a fully-paid POETS* day, so I won't be able to test the rush-hour train capacity.

    Woo-hoo!

I feel like celebrating, and most of my worries about working here have evaporated.

    Why?

I was calling the agency about my timesheet and she told me that due to their process of billing I'll be making £13.00/hr instead of £11.57! Almost 11% more. I am dead chuffed with that.

At the same time I am wary of overpayment so that cash will go into the current account and remain untouched ... the extra £36/week (£156/mo) will go far towards taking care of the overdraft. I wish I could make something with it. This is where investing comes in (?).

Still, I'll have much better overheads and that citizenship looks closer than ever.
