Stebiz, well done. That must have been very difficult for you, but it sounds like you did a sterling job!

Your daughter was bound to have a few last minute 'nerves' but hopefully you helped a lot in your handling of it. Please do continue with your plans to keep battling the depression though, just striving these last days seems to have helped your daughter a bit (and your wife, do you think?) and you too, definitely.

This made me smile - we never stop learning as parents, particularly with our firstborn!

Great work OP. Try and keep busy over the next few days but hold onto the fact that you have made her going a little bit easier, so she will enjoy the trip more - well done!

Just had the first email. She's due to get on the plane in the next 30 mins. Has weighed in but feels really sick. It has surprised me a bit with her to be honest. She has been on many weekends away with the guides etc but I think this 15 day one has really hit her. Told her it was 'all in the mind' 'take deep breaths' and 'enjoy the journey'. Kids be them 2 or 42, you never stop thinking about them!!

Well done you, you have sent her off with good advice and in good spirits if a little apprehensive which is how it should be.

Now, what are you going to do for the next two weeks so you have something interesting to talk with her about when she comes home with all her stories.

it's important to not make her feel that you have just sat and waited for her return, so, make some plans, do some new stuff or old stuff you enjoy. But have your journey while she has hers.

Well done OP, despite being attacked by many on this thread who have been an absolute disgrace, you have come out of it really well. She'll have a blast and I'm proud of you.

Thanks so much. I guess we are all due an opinion otherwise I wouldn't have posted. A few did surprise me though and others gave me a kick up the backside. I've learnt from it though;)

  • Hi Stebiz
I just read your initial and last posts and can see how far you've come in a couple of days. I can totally relate to how you are feeling but let me tell you I will never regret supporting the amazing travel opportunities that my (now adult) children had as teenagers. The first big one was seeing my then 17 year old son (eldest child) off to Washington to stay with an ex-teacher who had been over here on an exchange - he had an amazing time although I was a mess for 48 hours on the run up and during the travel time.

Watching him and his friend walk throught the departure security gate at Heathrow was tough. The trip opened his eyes to whole new world, one he totally wanted to be part of, he's now 23, in the RAF and has travelled to India, Norway, Dubai, Italy to name but a few. He is self assured and capable - this year he and g/f are off to Thailand. I still worry but not unreasonably so, bad things can happen to anyone, anywhere!!

My daughter (now 20) had a hurdle to climb when her b/f spent 8 months in Malaga and she had the opportunity to visit him. She doesn't like to fly but she got over it and travelled out to him twice "flying solo" - now they too have booked to travel in Thailand including Bangkok.

I will always worry about my kids but I am so so glad they are citizens of the world and I want them to go out and grab it all with both hands.

I have been to New York, it's an amazing place, full of wonderful sights and totally bustling. I felt safe at all times though and your daughter will have truly had her eyes opened. You can also bet that she will come home fully appreciating her home and her life with her family, after all, home is where the heart is.

So she's airborne now and on her way!:j Thank you so much for sharing your dilemmas in the past few days. You have taken some flak but seem to have come out of it safely at the end. Well done!:T

Great idea about middle one having a sleepover. It'll make her feel really grown up as she's the eldest at home for 15 days. Keep busy!

Stebiz - are you aware of this website?

    http://www.flightradar24.com/
You can enter the flight number, and follow the flight (granted, it does often drop off the radar mid atlantic, as the transponder signal is too weak to be picked up), it might make you feel slightly calmer if you can see she has landed safely.
