Everyone is quiet, are we practising for the weekend?
I am populating my website with things for people to do.... an events calendar is a pain in the butt to maintain - might drop it next year, but it's part of an experiment I am doing on traffic.

Sorry to hear that, viva. Hopefully the corner has been well and truly turned. Must be really difficult for both of you.

I've had today (and taking tomorrow) as annual leave... but going in the office to make the most of air con (sorry PN :)), and company whilst I try to tippety tap away on a keyboard.
It's not been hot here since the weekend. If I went into any job I had I'd be expected to work.... wouldn't get away with using the equipment without being pulled left, right and centre to do things, answer phones, answer queries, help people out etc.

Watching Who Do You Think You Are. I'd love to see the accounts from one of these programmes ... how much those professionals cost and all the travel the subject of the programme does.

I think ninky mentioned some similar programming costed out at around £70k production costs per episode (quite cheap in terms of TV making). Genealogists working on the programme, don't know, but wouldn't think they can't use the same ones the whole time as they will need to use different specialities. I'm sure they'd do it for a reasonable price though, it's a great thing to have on your CV/website.

The genealogist I know says in RL you can get genealogists charging anything from £10-50 per hour. Average is about £20ph, but you have to pay more for specialities, such as ability to translate documents in latin and be able to place them in context.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

That's expensive really. I'd love to do it, but it's too expensive to even do my own family.... all those copies of certificates mean you're spending money hand over fist just to check and prove everything.... never mind the time it takes.

Everyone just thinks its funny that I'm going in when I'm 'on holiday', I take in my own equipment (but no one has complained about me using the electricity), but we're allowed to use our laptops for personal business at home anyway (clearly wouldn't be looking at anything dodgy though!). And everyone is being very understanding (e.g. they start to say something then remember I'm 'not there' and tell me to get back to what I'm doing). If there was anything that urgently needed my attention, I would deal with it.

Plus I have the out of office message switched on my email.

I know lots of people though Pastures who make a really good go of it using the library editions of Ancestry and Find my Past. You would need to be able to set yourself a time to go though and do it regularly. Plus park far enough away and walk that you'd get the parking free.

I'd say most of the people I know who have tried it and stuck at it (and who are not of immigrant stock, which complicates things massively) have managed to get back to the 1700s along at least one line.

    I've been Money Tipped!
For all those with spare fruit, who fancy a pie but CBA to cut it out, fit the pastry, cut a lid, make them meet and finish off (also less calories): http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cuisine/european/english/a-very-easy-one-crust-gooseberry-pie.html

Rofl, I made an apple tart a bit like that today.

Thanks Nikks... Drtifosi has been really ill. It is a long recovery (much longer than it should have been if things went to plan) but he appears - after several weeks of very trying circumstances - to have turned the corner and finally be on the road to recovery.

We are very excited as we are going to try and go out on Saturday. It will be the first time he has left the house in the about 6 weeks since he got home from hospital, other than to go to the doctors surgery or briefly to have his hair cut as it had got really long. So big challenge time.

    Hope Saturday goes well.

Its tiring, going out and recovering. And the stir crazy bit is terrible. :(. Then getting used to the speed of the world.

I hope YOU feel ok. Taking care of people you love can be very draining.

It's a lot of faff .... to go and fight for a 1 hour slot, with associated parking/walking..... I look at stuff randomly online, in as far as one can. My mother's cousin's been doing it, but the trouble with other people's research is [1] they only follow lines they are interested in [2] they leave some people on the tree dangling with incorrect information as they weren't interested in them that much.

e.g. my g-grandmother had two boys first - no idea if they had kids/married and looking at genesreunited (free, so no details), the date I've got of a birth (1905) doesn't match the results, results show 1901. So you look, stare and think "pfft".

Then there's my grandmother's brother, died 1969. Did he marry? Have kids? No idea. He died young (under 50). And there's loads of loose ends it'd be interesting to tie up..... that'd take years.

And then, even if you do fancy getting a certificate it's a faff. Tried to get one for my sister and online wouldn't take the order .... so it had to be written for, and waited for. She did get her father's service number from it though .... although that doesn't really tell you anything unless you pay money to see if it's listed on any war records sites.... and even then it might just give start/end dates or something. He didn't die in any war, so not findable there. She's never seen her dad.
