While we're mentioning humour I'd recommend this for a bit of light reading.

That article wound me up. Calling the person on the checkout such a name when nobody actually knows her side of the story is totally unfair.

They are, but it's about income; when I was there the money was trickling in, now I'm driven by a 24/7 blind panic that I have to keep tweaking my site/s to try to kick start everything. Leisure is what one does when the roof's over your head and you're further up that Maslow pyramid. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs I'm bumbling along in the red/yellow bit. :)

If I had £1k coming in without fear, I'd be able to know I could go out and look at stuff.... take some time out.... but as it is all I can see is every penny spent when I step out of the door. £3 yesterday.... always feel I'm on the brink of a break through....

But .... Cornwall IS nicer to look at/enjoy.

I know this goes against the grain, but if you could bring yourself to claim benefits for a short time you would give yourself a breathing space.

He had me on her side within the first few sentences and that's where I've stayed. Nothing he said after that changed my mind.

Would NPs ever talk on their phone when paying for something at a chekout?

I would say hello to the checkout operator, thank them at the end etc but would also continue the call. Perhaps I am not qualified for the thread?
    I think....

Why doesn't anything like that ever happen in Staines?

I had to once in Singapore airport where I was buying something and the bank phoned me to check the transaction was genuine in the middle of the transaction. The guy serving me wasn't impressed that I suddenly got my phone out but didn't seem to understand enough English to get my explanation. It was a bit awkward. I'd never do it otherwise as I would get off the phone before getting to the checkout (or more likely not answer it at all in the first place).

    I have done that,

I give the check out person my best beam, and say, ' I am so sorry to be rude, do you mind if I continue this call?' They NEVER ONCE have said no.

    So I do.

If you beam and are polite in all other ways and continue to engage with eye contact and are not talking rudely or about inconsequential or offensive things inappropriate for public consumption then ins a part of modern life sadly.

Otoh. Peoe who continue to take social calls and serious numbers of texts on social occasions do piddle me off a bit. The time and place for texts is when your companions have gone to the loo surely:D

Edit...I'm not arguing I'm non the right to do it....I'm not. I just feel I have mitigated it and its less wrong than say....talking while driving.

Re phones. I would try not to be on my phone at checkout, but if I had to take an urgent call I would (and would apologise). For what it's worth, the most ignorant person I've ever served took out a bottle of nail varnish and started painting her nails. I deliberately positioned her things so she couldn't pick them up without smudging. Not very nice am I? Sorry...

Years ago I did some "out of hours" work. You hardly got a call, but I couldn't go shopping "in case". Those who were in a couple could have gone shopping as they could have taken the call and left the other one to do the packing/paying, but the out of hours calls needed to be dealt with as though the caller were calling somebody sitting at a desk in front of a computer, there was no option to say "Look mate, I'm in Tesco" - especially as most out of hours calls were from Directors having login problems.

There are some times, some people, who have to take an unexpected call... but if it's your mate asking what you're doing tonight they should be got rid of pre-checkout.

My lovely husband is out cutting the hedge.

The alternative is hiding behind the sofa. He is going to try and watch the tennis near the end.
