I'd heard that an old friend (well, more of an acquaintance) was very ill, so I dropped in to say hello. The wife and daughter said he was too ill to see anyone. Basically, they'd already started grieving for his passing away.0

Growing up, when it was salad and we asked what it was always "I've got lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes....." as if that was a salad (meal) .... and we'd have to start suggesting cheese, boiled eggs and marg/bread to make it a meal. I kind of dread that phrase "lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes..." when presented as the main event
Bread is the basis of most of what I eat because it's easy. Not a loaf of bread, I buy long-life part-baked baguettes, muffins and long-life naans mostly because they will keep. I like crumpets, but then have to choose between a pack of crumpets, or a pack of muffins as both can't be eaten within the date on the pack. And, I rarely leave the house, so am only in a food shop about once a week.
I've had celery in the past, hated it, it's bitter ... and that's when it looks OK...
I love veggies, but dislike the steam/smell they create when cooking (even in a microwave), so that's why, for now, I don't eat many of them as I sit/eat/sleep and cook in the same room.... so it'd get stinky.
Modern celery is less bitterit's almost.....bland now. What comes through is the slight salty
I am not much of a fan of lettuce. I eat it, of course, its fresh and healthy, but I know what you mean about boring salads!
Our salads tend to be herb heavy. I also like things like hearts of palm and the 'fresh' anchovies in salads. ( in fact, I just like them buy themselves, little fishes of delicious)0 -

About two days before my loss I phoned a couple of old friends of my dad to say "write now if you wish, else it'll be too late". It was heartbreaking when both did write, lovely pieces, but a day too late
Agreed.
An older neighbour of ours who dh was close to and who I grew friendly with had a terrible death, and didn't 'receive' people for the last months. A friend moved in to take care of him, but he would see no body else. We used to leave notes for him, and music that we thought he might like etc. I have often hoped they were something. He was quite determined to be lonely even before he was ill and we hoped that these little things let him know he was in our thoughts.0 -

Did you find them?
When I went to bed, we hadn't.
They were found by accident today.lostinrates wrote: »Modern celery is less bitterit's almost.....bland now. What comes through is the slight salty

This is why I try to grow my own salad stuff. The stuff we generally buy is force grown too quickly, so never develops tastes, flavours and textures.
I've just been out watering stuff, & think in a couple of weeks I'll start eating the first salad batch. I've 2 subsequent lots planted, and will be planting a 4th next weekend for an ongoing supply. You can taste the green-ness when you eat it!:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
So have just been outside watering, & starting some of the major weeding I need to do.
I noticed that one of my composters has a significant amount of ants in & around it.
Is this going to be a problem? Or could it be a good sign?
I planned to start using some of it for repotting over the next couple of days. Looks like I need to repot a few carrots, my cucumber, and some of the beetroot that I started off in trays. Busy weekend then! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

The bancassurers (that's the life assurance arms of banks) have access to lots of personal banking data for underwriting purposes. Curiously enough, they found a positive correlation between using the bank's cash dispenser frequently and long life. Weird, or what? Until you realise that using the cash dispenser a lot means that the individual is out and about, doing things, getting at least some exercise, and not just moping about at home.

IMO its an improvement but many foodies would vehemently disagree! Bitter is a pretty lost taste in the uk modern diet really.0 -

It's the second Eurovision semi final, just started on BBC3, for anyone who's interested.
