a full Scottish breakfast. It has become a byword for an inadequate meal in our house.

Next time you're in the highlands ask me where to go for a real Scottish breakfast....

Bacon, Lorne Sausage, Haggis, Eggs, fried tattie scones, tomato/mushrooms/beans, etc.

A proper heart attack on a plate.;)

I've had some bad breakfasts when I've stayed in hotels/B&Bs. I never used to have breakfast, it wasn't something we had as kids, so I first had breakfasts if I had to stay away for jobs.

What is annoying is when the breakfast is: bacon, sausage, mushrooms, egg.... so you say "sausage and egg please" and hope/expect to get two portions of each - and, instead, you get one chipolata sausage and one egg.

Worst was in London once. In the morning some foreign waitress came and asked "full English?" I think she was only trained to know "yes" or "no". Well, I want to know "What's in that?" so I can pick ... she didn't understand, so got another waitress.... who had to get a 3rd. So, finally, we'd established I wanted toast and sausage/egg. The toast arrived completely white (it'd been toasted, but not even got to light brown) - and the egg/sausage was one egg, one sausage when the "Full English" had been bigger.

I also was never sure what to do at breakfast..... if you ask for a full English can you also then have all the stuff on the sideboard.

About 15 years ago I had a job where we'd have the occasional Breakfast Meeting - before work hours. The hotel was across the road from my house and they did a buffet..... so I'd get there first/early and have everything. By the time the others arrived I had fruit juice, coffee, toast, jam, marmalade and have an overloaded plate of: 4 sausages, 4 fried eggs, huge serving scoop of scrambled eggs, huge serving scoop of beans, heaped serving scoop of roast potato bits, huge serving scoop of tinned tomatoes, few bits of fried bread triangles .....

When I am at a place that comes and asks you what you want, then delivers you toast/coffee while your Full English is cooking .... it's a bit annoying as I like to shove my toast under the Full English. What I usually do is have 1-2 triangles of the toast while waiting .... and save the other 2 triangles to go under the brekky :)

Oh .... and brown sauce on that too.

As far as I'm concerned the rule in hotels is to eat EVERYTHING you can get your hands on and then ask for more.

    Baked eggs are good.

Is there anything in particular your chum could eat? My meds make a lot funny, but I have somethings that are fine. Other meds its just been a glass of milk, but usually something is better than nothing.

His diet should be carbs heavy at the moment. His issue is appetite has gone as a result of the meds. It will take him a full day to eat a sandwich - couple of bites at a time.

The first time I stayed in a Hotel, it was an unfortunate turn of events. It was some insurance company team get together with some entertainment laid on.

There was an evening meal, I was starving - picked up the menu and somebody said "No, they've ordered for us". What they'd ordered was a jacket potato, steak and green beans. So all I got was a jacket spud and green beans.

Next morning, breakfast ..... I discovered that "breakfast is not included" and it was £6.50 (this was in about 1982, so a lot of money) .... so I didn't have breakfast, just sat at the table while everybody else did. Since that first experience I have always been nervous that I am racking up a bill ....

Something else I meant to write last night. I recall going through my experience with the employer. 2 friends stood out in particular. One (male) helped me with building my case against them. Very practical/trying to fix it kinda help. Another (female) was a kind of comfort blanket. I was up & down like a yo-yo, & am sure I wasn't too easy to be around. Dunno how she put up with me tbh.

Sadly, about 2 years later she had a similar experience with an employer. I reciprocated the support they'd given me. What amazed me, was that during their difficult period she told me she was sorry she hadn't been very supportive, as it was such a bad thing to go through. I'm not sure she's aware of how much her support at the time meant.

This is dh too. It's boring if you are not eating enough to feed an army sitting with someone who is planning their third trip to the buffet, therefore, rudely, I often bring a book or read the paper.

My most longed for hotel breakfast treat is the perfect glass of juice. I prefer the cold meats and cheeses as its something I don't think I ever do at home. I also love fruit salads I haven't made.

Maybe something that smelled good? Warm breads or even fresh for the oven cake?
