We must have had the recipe for the wrong one. I would have liked one like this.

She just connects with our business and has done since she was very small.... helped out in our shop from age of 11, I used to drag her up to town on buying trips ..as had no childcare...she went to LFW exhibition when she was 7..again because no childcare :)....come to think of it, could have been my lack of childcare that stimulated the interest as I used to try and involve her when she had to drag along with me. You know, in that guilty working mother way....sing song voice like ''oooh look, how exciting, we can buy 4 dozen jumpers for the shop. Shall we buy black or cream or both?''

The stupid thing is we have a suburban lower-middle class guilt and feel she should 'do' her 'own thing' though we never said 'you must work in the family biz', she just chose to join in for the summer hols after she finished her legal secretarial course...and stayed.
She then created her own role/duties by default.

She is now doing short courses to learn essential skills (such as photoshop).

Surprisingly, we rarely argue coinsidering we are all together all the time :) We do have 'heated debates' though.

Handmaid's tale, Lord of the Flies, Logan's Run, Minority Report? More recent: Cloud Atlas, Hunger Games (I think that was mentioned earlier), maybe Never Let Me Go? I'm trying to think what's popular.
Does 'Book of Dave' (Will Self) fit into this genre? I keep meaning to read it and have tried 3 times but couldn't get past chapter 3...all the different tyopes of people confused me....but I should try again as it's meant to be great.

No, that's not normal.... in most of the rest of the country that'd make the house look like a bunker/scrap yard :)

Also, the houses with allocated parking wouldn't allow any such thing.... and they are in the location I desire.

Just checked the car - it's 7' wide including mirrors (blimey - you'd never think a car was bigger than 4' would you!).... then there's room needed to open the doors.

... just been having another look at houses, one that was the right price/look but in the wrong area (dodgy) had at least three undesirable features: Leaded windows, bright red glossy kitchen units, hideous feature walls with huge prints, what looked like a garage in the photo turned out to be another room (that I don't need).

Oooops we just turned our integrated garage into a telly room and sliced some off to make a shower room to add to downstairs loo (which we were told is popular if we sell as suits disabled access)
Our reasoning being that we had used the garage as a dumping area and it wouldn't really fit a car properly.
We also nicked a bit of path and made it into a corridor.

PN I know alterations can be costly but you can change red doors, wallpaper and even the windows ...costs about 4k for a 3 bed semi) . I know you will say you couldn't but you could.
Wrong area though, you can't change that.
In the end location is everything as you can change the look/interior but not where it is.

Gen, I don't know whether it fits in with your "dystopian" viewpoint, but I'd recommend Alex Garland (The Beach is a great book, and I really enjoyed Coma, but read that in a day). I've enjoyed Iain M Banks writing The Player of Games (his 2nd sci-fi book. Didn't go for Consider Phlebas much) but have enjoyed a few of his Iain Banks books (most notably Dead Air was great. Canal Dreams was good too).
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Actually that could be a good sign. If they've converted a garage the house could be on for more than a similar property more to your needs. Are there any similar ones, pref without new red kitchens and features walls?
No - and it was in the wrong area too ... geographically it's in one of those places where you go down a huge/long dip/hill then up the other side, then down..... I don't do hills :)

Think I've found one to view that'll "do", although no garage and I can't find the bugg4h on streetview, which is always annoying and normally I'd not bother being persistant enough to phone an agent... I might contact the agent on Monday.... although I'm £20k short, depends on who else fancies it/how desperate they are.

Not everywhere... I checked the local College when I moved down this way and they wanted about the same as salons. I actually found a shop's "models wanted" cheaper in the end.

When I have this house, pick up the keys, walk in that front door, I expect to have about £10 left in my pocket and £100 left in the bank if I'm lucky. This is literally going to wipe out every penny I can scrabble together. Everything.

FC, I'm guessing you've known about farfetch for years... but thought I'd mention them.

...........if it's good offer 25k less and see what happens (cos then you can up to 20k less). Worst case is they say no but worth asking.

I understand that but you can change the cubboard doors and things you don't like a few years later when the new biz takes off.:)
