    Good result in the States.
I used to spend a lot of time in New England and always remember when you crossed the state line into Massachussetts they had gaint posters warning you it was a gun-free state and the consequences of being found with a gun, so I was surprised by the fact the guys had so many firearms.

He might get a better deal in custody than that eejit who tried to blow up Glasgow's favourite airport but instead set fire to himself and was then attacked by the ungrateful public he'd been planning to blow up!

That Glasgow bloke really was a rubbish terrorist. It was quite funny how bad he was.

I've read the obvious ones: Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Brave New World, Clockwork Orange, Animal Farm.

Handmaid's tale, Lord of the Flies, Logan's Run, Minority Report? More recent: Cloud Atlas, Hunger Games (I think that was mentioned earlier), maybe Never Let Me Go? I'm trying to think what's popular.

Came across some amazing info in my family history research for my friend but it did make me chuckle.

You know how much people say from time to time about how evil buy to let is and that it is a recent phenomenon that stops people getting on the housing ladder? And that people benefitted from council house sales at the expense of later generations?

Well I've found evidence of the family involved being able to buy a number of houses and running them as investment properties. Their purchase of these properties could be argued to be barring those who would have traditionally lived their lives there. The properties then became part of the family's stored wealth for future generations and you can see them being part of wills.

What was the catalyst that enabled them to do this? The Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Dunno - I always put comfort first so may be I have always just worn shoes that are 'too big'

Looking at development property tomorrow, Big lil bro may be helping to fund it, thinking about getting consent to let on current house so can get cheap resi mortgage on new property and declare it ppr for cgt purposes.

I need to get sketching and go visit the planners for an initial consultation.

    Some musings.

Can make it your ppr just by living in it as your ppr for a few months and changing all your addresses to it; so that bit is easy. Don't know how Big lil bro protects his investment if it is all in your name. Also don't know how easy it is to get a biggie mortgage if you've reduced your income to take advantage of tax breaks etc.

On CTL perceived wisdom is to ask anonymously the likely answer before you give your name, or you risk being hassled by the lender checking up on things in the future.

If it is a development property, where will you live while your developing?

How does that conversation start? How easy is it to get appointments? How long do you get? How much do you disclose about what/why?

Probably a phone call and possibly a visit the following week. "I'm thinking of building a tower block in my back garden and wonder if I'd get consent?" "Really. OK so a bungalow may be acceptable, with its own drive."

Bits of Cloud Atlas was filmed near my old school. Seen excerpts on the web and it looks fascinating.;)

Philip K !!!!!!'s books have been mined for dystopic movies like Total Recall, blade runner, A Scanner, Darkly, Minority Report. must see or read the Hunger Games.DD loved it

    Atchu is his first name.

I've not met him (yet) but his direct boss reports directly to the board of one of the biggest asset management firms in APAC. He works on the 'rocket scientists' desk.

He's very highly thought of to the extent that nobody even smirks at his name. By Crikey I find it hard not to.

There is someone in my office called Wing Man!

That really is one of the great dystopia books. I love a good dystopia, me.

DAK of a really amazing one that's been written since the 1960s? There were some TV plays that were good in the 80s around nuclear war but no great books that I can think of.

I thought Swan Song was quite good although probably doesn't qualify as "amazing". The Road is pretty good as well. I've just finished reading On The Beach - that was written in the 50s. Technically these are all apocalyptic rather than dystopian. Same difference though.

Does anyone know of anyone that would happily take a tree from my garden (it needs felling first), and would happy to be at the house when we're both working? (you can get into the garden from the back)

It's going to stop me putting the following through my neighbours door:
    Dear neighbour,

Here are the office keys, here's my diary for next 3 weeks (5000 miles, across 8 countries and about 300 hours of work), and here are the keys for my car. If you'd still like me to sort the tree out, please let me know.

    Many thanks!
