That really is one of the great dystopia books. I love a good dystopia, me.
DAK of a really amazing one that's been written since the 1960s? There were some TV plays that were good in the 80s around nuclear war but no great books that I can think of.
Try S M Stirling. He's a bit weird sometimes, but very good indeed....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I have written this evening to accept an invitation to a party in August.
It is from three longstanding residents in the village to celebrate their 80th Birthdays.
I am really looking forward to it as they are all huge fun with bags of energy and a real joie de vivre. They seem to be of a generation and social group that really knew how to enjoy themselves and I am quite envious of their 'style'.0 -

Sounds great. To keep on topic, is it black tie?
My Dad reckoned his mother-in-law's 80th birthday was fantastic. One of the reasons he said he liked it so much was because he was the 5th youngest person there, out of about 75 people, after his 4 children (-:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Oooh has he flown the nest? If so how is he affording it? I need some hope DD will fledge ..
Is it 50?
If it is I can vouch that it is not too bad, although I have to be honest and admit I thought I would have had more money by this time in my life. On second thoughts, I have had the money...but it has been spent. Children are money pits.0 -

Got no money anyway, hence spend too much time on moneysaving site. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

Dress code: Comfortable:)...just that phrase makes me want to wear something with an elasticated waist and buy Mr S a pair of slacks.
One of the birthday boys usually wears a cravat to evening social events, the other (and my OH) wore black tie to the opera last year only he topped it off with a cape  and the birthday girl is usually very elegant...even when gardening.
They have also written "Please no presents" so what do we do?0 -
PN, I know it's not the thing to say on this board but the prices seem to be creeping up monthly at the moment.
I know I am basing this view just on SE London and Thanet knowledge but it could spread out.
All I know is if we had 'done' Margate 2 years ago would have been a good 20% lower and our neighbours house was 350 ish @ peak 2007 and has just sold for 430.
I know you can't rush to buy but prices are now following inflation and are going up. Could be 10% more by next year. You may have to compromise on what you want for your budget so you don't get priced out.
Contact some EA's to notify as soon as stuff comes on as things sell before they even reach RM especially well priced probate stuff.
Of course, if one wants something there'll be a sudden rush for it.
Looked again today - nothing.
I haave three clashing wants and can't decide what I need a house for as there are several ways of looking at it.
Weather's been too sh1te to consider contacting agents and I don't fancy wasting time/money viewing anything that doesn't float my boat on the basis that it's a 40 mile round trip, so £6 in fuel, just to go and look. When the weather's better I plan on taking a drive out and a walk around the areas..... and do one big round robin and also pick up things on my list of "Things I would like to get, but the cost of driving to buy one thing that you don't need immediately makes it daft to do so".0 -

He fledged properly a few months ago and is renting a very small house with 2 mates for £1500pcm (which does deserve a ). It's in Peckham.
Very MSE as we spend so much less on everything now though we did give him the deposit. Got one more to go but she has no interest in moving out at all as she isn't a wild child wanting her own play space.
He has been an expensive child in terns of further education costs.
DD is quite a bargain child as she generates income into the business (and she is salaried).....it's almost like one trades off against the other.:) I estimate that DD brings in an extra 300k T/O just with the skills she has .....not the ones taught by us.0 -
I don't have silk socks. Nor have I ever been to a black tie do.
I'd actually be a bitabout disclosing too much about my socks here. I've a few very old pairs. Taking mse to the extreme, I won't throw em til there is a hole in em...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
