Viewed potential investment property today - it looked nice in the sunshine and plot seemed OK but property is about 4 feet too far back from side street (corner plot) for my plan to put detached house in garden to work :(
    I think....

Do you need to get a car in the garage as that probably rules out anything built in the last 25 years...
Yes.... and I know a lot are small.... but I'd be prepared to even get a smaller car.

I just hate the idea of a car being outside the house when I am in - and not when I am away. With a car in a garage nobody's that aware of your movements. As it's only ever "just me", it's more of a safety/security feeling when I am absent.

In a perfect world, a double garage would be fab, but you rarely see those these days .....

Houses I am looking at include a previous single garage being converted then sold off... Maybe your planned new house would be as big/posh as all your other houses... it could work with a less grand scale.

As somebody who couldn't even raise a £50k mortgage on a house to live in .... I'm curious how you'd manage to borrow £500k.

I know someone who has a heap big pair of gates and you can never see whether they are in or not as the lights aren't on at the front and you can't see behind the gates. Would that be a reasonable compromise?

It never bothers me, but security advice from police etc is always to keep hedges and gates etc at a metre or below...so that their is less place to hide I guess.

Personally, I prefer privacy, but worth considering.

A double garage pan. Smaller house must be very rare.

DD has asked me to help her home dye her hair tomorrow. She has never done anything like this before, and neither have I.

I am appalled at the idea but do not want to be judgemental. I am very conservative.

This may be beacause she would like a change/boost after a hard few months and highlights will cost £120.

Mr S suggests we offer to treat her.

NP thoughts please, do I support her decison without further comment and help her or sound out the option of highlights?

Spirit, there's hair dye and there's hair dye. Is she looking for something permanent that's a radical change? I have mid brown hair. I've dyed it dark brown and it wasn't a massive change, I've put henna on and it just gives a nice reddish tint. I've also used fun wash in wash out colours in my younger days. But if I was to do something radical like go blonde, well, that's something that I'd only trust a hairdresser with. I think it's hard to know what to suggest without knowing the degree of change. The bigger the change, the more I'd leave it to the pros.

No, that's not normal.... in most of the rest of the country that'd make the house look like a bunker/scrap yard :)

Also, the houses with allocated parking wouldn't allow any such thing.... and they are in the location I desire.

Just checked the car - it's 7' wide including mirrors (blimey - you'd never think a car was bigger than 4' would you!).... then there's room needed to open the doors.

... just been having another look at houses, one that was the right price/look but in the wrong area (dodgy) had at least three undesirable features: Leaded windows, bright red glossy kitchen units, hideous feature walls with huge prints, what looked like a garage in the photo turned out to be another room (that I don't need).

Depends what colour. I used to dye mine a burgundy colour. Never came to any harm. Only issues to think of when you're doing it yourself are the mess potential - and what to do/where to sit while you're in the "waiting for it" stage. If you've got a showercap that'd help... and lots of old towels. Wear old clothes. Do it in the garden then hose her down.

Actually that could be a good sign. If they've converted a garage the house could be on for more than a similar property more to your needs. Are there any similar ones, pref without new red kitchens and features walls?
