    I need help!

Can anyone come up with birthday present ideas? The person involved will be 43, doesn't like girly things like handbags or shoes, loves books but is very choosy which ones and is not at all materialistic.

Yep, my birthday next week and everyone keeps asking me what I want...beggered if I know!

Not sure what budget is, or whether friends/family could all contribute but how about this?

I know it's not cheap but I love the sound of it.

I am in a foul mood. I took an honest look at my own weight since Generali mentioned his, and concluded that I am at least half a stone and probably 3/4 stone heavier than I should be.

    :rotfl:

It must be the season for it. I was a bit shocked at Gen's weight too.

I'm 6'4" and used to play Rugby, lift weights, cycle, ski competitively, etc, so always packed on a lot of muscle and consumed vast quantities of calories. Now I do none of those things, but maintained the appetite of a grizzly bear, so have been packing on a bit of middle aged spread.

The wake up call for me was finding some photos of myself as an 18 year old, and realising I'm now nearly twice the man I used to be. :o

Mrs McT has put me on a diet... Losing 3kg a week, so it's working.

Can't say I'm grumpy though... Actually feeling a lot better, although switching to sugar free soft drinks has been a bit of a shock to the system.

    Jewellery?

    Amazon vouchers?

Amazon vouchers would be good too...jewellery not quite so good.

    Thanks
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

    Maybe try something new?

An experience you'll never forget rather than an item you may never use?

That is something I have been hinting at, what kind of experience though is harder to pin down, especially as I would love to do something like go up high in Tower bridge but then know I wouldn't be able to do it because I hate heights!

Would still like to try though....

  • 3kg a week - you have to be a man. S'not fair (-:

I am 5 ft 7. My BMI is within the healthy range, but I know I am a bit overweight.

Sadly, I have quite a small frame for my height - I take after my Dad, who although just over 6 feet tall, only take size 8 shoes, and isn't big for his height.

My mother is 5 ft 8, and larger-framed than I am, she is slim and healthy at 11 stone, although currently lighter than this because of cancer / chemotherapy.

My next sister is 5 ft 7.5, just taller than I am, and 8 stone. She is very slim, and also smaller framed than I am.

I am in a foul mood. I took an honest look at my own weight since Generali mentioned his, and concluded that I am at least half a stone and probably 3/4 stone heavier than I should be. My problem is that I like eating. It's fun.

So I'm now on a diet, and that puts me in a grump, a mega-grump at that, too.

It makes it harder that I live with two of the male of the species who both eat enough for a small army, each, and are slim with it!

As I say on other parts of the board, the data are what they are. If I think house prices should fall but they go up instead then perhaps I'm better off looking at why I'm wrong than trying to argue that prices should have fallen.

Similarly I have always been slim and fit. Then I found that I was kinda overwieght and quite fit. Not fat but there was a tummy there (and still is) which wasn't there before. I argued for a while that it was muscle being gained for the most part; I made no argument for or against the tummy as it was temporary. The temporary period went on for 4 years.

Ultimately if I don't want a tummy I have to eat less. Exercise helps but it's really about the diet. My BiL tried to tell me that weight is all about exercise but he must weigh about 110kg. I still have a way to go but I have the skill set required to lose weight now. Time will tell whether I have the skill set required to keep it off.

I've been considering doing a fast day once a fortnight or something. My Dad used to do that and it wouldn't be to lose weight so much as to see what happens. I heard a very interesting Food Program recently about fast days claiming that fasting made you less likely to get Alzheimer's. That didn't work out so well for Papa Generali who died of The Big A in his 60s. Oh well, at least the coffin was light.

BTW, I reckon I am a lot better on tea, coffee and water than some chemical cocktail to be found in diet Solo or PepsCok Zeroty-nil.

    What's wrong with jewellery?

I don't really wear it, so it would be a waste. I have a couple of necklaces which I mix about and there really isn't any need for anymore.
