Well I just learned something.
If you like fascinating (to me) facts, CB Fry is well worth looking up. England cricket captain, FA Cup winner, holder of the long jump world record and turner down of the Albanian throne amongst other things.0 -
.....and the vendor of Margate called up to find out what we are going to do about his 'cash' as he doesn't want to pay his CGT.
The polite answer, at his level of understanding, is that you are worried about the CGT you will incur when you eventually sell, so you need the recorded price to be as high as possible.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. TBH, I'd be inclined to say something along the lines of, "either we do this properly or not at all".0 -

Not sure how you are structuring the sale but you can quite legitimately pay for a property with a suitcase of cash if you want to. I assume you don't want to though - if you have a solicitor acting for you on the sale suggest that you use the solicitor as an excuse. "My solicitor says I have to pay all the money to him and he will arrange the transfer of completion monies I don't really understand it you'll have to speak to my solicitor directly".
There's no problem paying in cash, money-laundering excepted, but the documentation (eg the TR1 form) will need to reflect the true amount paid. Otherwise, FC will be involved in fraud. There is a clause in the TR1 to say "The transferor has received from the transferee for the property the following sum (in words and figures): ", and is FC really going to sign a false declaration?
Similarly, the SDLT1 form asks "Is this transaction linked to any other(s)?"
So, it is not possible to side-step the fraud and leave the vendor to it, even if you want to.
It is legitimate to buy the furniture, appliances, garden shed, pot plants, (removable) carpets and curtains as a separate cash deal at a realistic value. I guess this might save the vendor a smidgeon of tax if he chooses not to declare it, and such transactions can legitimately be for cash.
At the end of the day, you can't force him to sell to you, and he can't force you to do anything illegal. So, accommodate him as much as you can whilst staying within the law, and that defines your boundary that you don't step over.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Michaels,
I agree with you with carpets. They make me shudder, but less so when just cleaned. Now we have this cleaner I would consider carpeting in bedrooms in the future. It's really, really good. But I still prefer hard floors.
The terrible weather woke us up a few times last night. Horrid.0 -
I agree, to both parts.
I think the last time I used a hairdryer was about 2007. This also helps my low maintenance hair cutting schedule (about once a year. I think I had my hair cut twice last year which was quite unusual).
I have mine cut about twice a year, too. Whether it needs it or not!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I'd tell him that he has zero chance of me handing over a carrier bag of my hard earned without a receipt and to get used to the fact that you'll be using a solicitor.
If he threatens to pull out so what? Ultimately fc you hold all the cards as if he's not 100% stupid he'll know that you can go to the tax authority and tell on his not so cunning plan. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I can't remember when mine was last cut, probably about 2 years ago, possibly more!
I really really need to get it done soon though but everytime I think about making an appointment, it then either goes clean out of my head or all hell breaks out and I can't find the time to get it done.
Naughty Susan.....:rotfl:We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
In Aus, houses connected to town water are all on meters so saving water is a priority, even at times like now when the drought has broken.
We've got one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Evolve-Showerheads-SS-1002CP-SB-Water-Saving-Shower-Head/dp/B0017YXIKC
It's great. You turn your shower on hot and wonder off to get tea/use toilet/shout at the kids/make dinner. Normally you get back and the water is hot but loads of it has gone down the drain.
With this, once hot water starts coming through, it restricts the flow to a dribble until you come back and flick the lever back over. Brilliantly simple! It'll save us a mint.
Interesting. I might get one of those.
My new thermostatic shower has now been installed. DS tells me he deliberately flushed the loo while I was in it this morning to see if I would notice. I didn't.A Physics joke:
Werner Heisenberg is out for a drive when he's stopped by a traffic cop.
The cop says "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Heisenberg says "No, but I know where I am."
Love it. Have forwarded it to the phys & chem departments at work.lostinrates wrote: »Urgh, I have had a migraine that I just couldn't shift. Horrid.
Viva, is it you that likes sainsburies for clothes? Dh just came back from sainsburies with a really pretty summer dress for me and a pair of shoes.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
