  • Charity shops or chuck it. Hanging onto it 'to do something with it' is what got you into a mess in the first place, unless you're going to ebay it this week or get a car boot sale done, just get rid of it

Second for the charity shop/tip approach.

I'm married to a hoarder and it drives me to despair. I hate it and I hate her for it sometimes.

    :) Early October. But it's probably catching.:rotfl:

Yesterday I took 2 IKEA bags of couch grass tussocks and other vegetative nasties to the tip, which represents decluttering a hoard of such stuff on the side of the allotment (they used to be growing on The Rough). I've accepted that there's no way that they can be dried out enough to burn by the end of March which is the last point until the beginning of Oct when we're allowed to have bonfires on the lotties. Especially since I donated the most-of-a-shed which would have formed to core of the bonfire.

Which means I have a herculean task ahead of me, as a non-car-owner, to get the stuff away. You can't compost this bliddy stuff as it survives. Plus it contains other horrors which can regenerate like bindweed and horsetail roots.

My fondest ambition is that all the lottie will one day be in the condition of the bottom three-quarters, where the battle against the couch grass has been won and it only requires eternal vigiliance to keep it from coming back.

Have also decided that at the end of every weekend gardening session I shall spend a couple of mins on a shed-tidying and sweep out, to keep things orderly in there. Go me!

GQ - is the person you donated the part of a shed to a car owner? If so, could you ask them for help? Or, in fact, any of your other lotty neighbours. I'm sure they'd be willing to help if they knew you needed help...

At work I'm known for the regimented condition of the items on my desk; and I'm particularly good with any task that requires a methodical approach with an eye for detail :rotfl:. I don't think any of my colleagues truly believes the depths that the house sank to....and I wasn't letting anyone in to prove it .
I shredded a couple more wodges of 2012 debit card receipts during the adverts whilst watching a film on tv last night. Baby steps really do make a difference don't they? That's another pile gone from the living room.
This morning I've recycled an Argos catalogue valid until 24th December......2010!!!! And I've cleared a space on the dining table to put a cs bag to fill - I've been laid in bed mulling over what can go to the cs next: a biscuit tin shaped liked a Christmas tree which winds up and plays a tune; a clock/torch/bumbag set still boxed; a jumper given to me to 'try' by my mother; a tin for baking cakes in; and the four mugs in a wire holder that I unearthed last week.

  • The problem with ebay is that there is quite a bit of work involved - and so it requires motivation to actually take photographs, list the stuff, take it to the post office etc.

I think most of us have a bag or a box of stuff somewhere in the house which needs to go on ebay one day!

Be ruthless. Unless its really worth some money take it to the charity shop or tip. This probably isnt very MSE but if your goal is to clear the house then its just about getting rid of things.

If you are finding it hard to start then say to yourself I will get rid of 10/20/50 things this week then build from there.

    Good luck.

:) He's a lovely bloke but poor as a church mouse, lives in a hostel and rides an old pushbike. Hence it was very nice to be able to do him a favour, particularly after his present (dilapidated) shed was damaged in the break-ins and he was robbed of some hand-tools.

I do have another nearby lottie neighbour who will offer to take stuff in their van in they're going, but we don't often meet up, so it's hard to co-ordinate. I will persevere and if I see them, I will ask if they're doing a dump run. It's about a 30 min round trip with a barrow, but much easier on the return run. I will only do the barrow-run once a gardening day as that's all the juice in my personal system.

Righty, this isn't getting the gardening (or the barrowing done) so I'm outta here and off up the road. Have a good and productive decluttering day, lovely peeps.

  • Join your local FREECYCLE or FREEGLE group, you'd be amazed at what people will want and the joy is they come and collect from you, all you have to do is offer the items on the board and choose who you'd like to give them to. Then it's just a case of deciding on collection time!

    :) Evening all.

I have been to work (boo! hiss!) and have taken two books to the library and returned with only one, so that's an improvement. One of the two returns was actually a donated book, which they may bring into lending or sell, as they see fit.

Have spent quite a bit of time this evening trying to declutter an insurance claim form and realised I still lack one piece of info, so will try to get that tomorrow then finally post the blasted thing. You start to lose the will to carry on with them after a while, don't you.

    How is everybody coping today?
