  • Hello everyone

I have been missing in actions for a few days but it's because I have been de-Hoarding.:j

:j The stairs are completely clear - nothing on them at all except carpet. Not even any dust.:j

The bedroom is a bit different. Still clutter but the difference can been seen.

More shredding today. Where the heck does this come from.

Next job is putting away the washing and sorting through some magazines. I find this difficult but can find anything I need online. I never look at them anyway. I do have some old 70's Golden Hands (anyone remember them) which were my Nan's so I'm going to keep them. Everything else can go.

    Onwards and upwards.:T

Decluttered some nails from skirting boards today. Also used half a packet of sandpaper - rubbing said skirting boards down ready for painting.

  • I am a hoarder of allsorts, and need to have a declutter as I haved moved in with my parents after a messy break up.

It means I have half a flats worth of stuff boxed up, and while I try and clear my debt I am surrounded by it until I move out.

I don't want to get rid of things I will need (like kitchen stuff) as I won't be able afford to buy again, but the sight of all my boxes is sending me crazy.

    Any advice where to start?

Charity shopped 1 book and a coat of DD's today.

Thrifty, do your parents hoard a bit too? If so, you could potentially join forces with their kitchen stuff and keep only the best of yours and theirs for when you move back out.

Definitely worth trying to unpack the boxes somehow. There is nothing more depressing than stacks of boxes that hook you in to the life you left behind.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • Yes they do!

    How did you know, lol.

Thank you for the advice, its a good point. I'll be here for a while until I can get my debt down.

I'll have a good look through some of the boxes tomorrow and see which ones to open and potentially get rid of.

    Thanks

    :) Morning all.

    Hello and welcome, Thrifty Fashionista.

I had to do something akin to what you describe years ago; moved back in with my parents for a while due to ill-health. Formerly had my own place, mercifully the furniture bar one or two portable things was the landlord's but I still had a household's worth of chattels.

I whittled it down to 3 middling-sized boxed in my parents' loft as the room I was using at theirs' is the boxy back bedroom. They have a small house, and Mum is hoarder-ish.

I had all the saucepans and baking sheets/ cake tins in one box, nested by size, with each one in a carrier bag so they didn't mark each other, and the lids similarly-bagged and slid down the sides of the box. There was room in there for the cutlery, bagged, and the utensils, with the nooks and crannies packed with soft stuff like tea-towels and oven gloves.

If you have to shed kitchen stuff due to lack of storage room, it's worth remembering that glasses, mugs and crockery can be replaced pretty cheaply new, and thus can be shed without taking much of a financial hit, if space is critical.

Clothes I am assuming you'll have out anyway as you'll be using them. Bedlinen I stored in a suitcase; I had a quantity which fitted easily but if you have an awful lot, you might want to whittle down.

Unless emotions are particularly tender, you could try asking yourself, how much would this item cost to replace? How easy would it be to get hold of second hand at the boot fair or chartiy shop? What do they cost new?

Also look at the volume of the item, as well as the weight. A lamp displaces quite a bit of space and most of them are inexpensive to replace. But you might have some precious trinkets which take up no more than a shoebox all added together but which you are loathe to part with. Beating yourself up over these items and forcing yourself to get rid would be pointless and counter-productive. HTH.

  • Thank you GreyQueen and Whitewing,

I feel much better today after everyone's support!

Already looking around today, there are things I know I can do without. I've made a list of where to start so here I go......

Today I have decluttered my DS and a large quantity of his 'stuff' back to Uni.

I am now going to get rid of some chocolate and some alcohol - cider to be exact.

As I will now have unlimited access to the laptop it is my firm intention to make progress in turning this house into a home with the help and inspiration of this thread.

Goal: to be able to invite friends over at Christmas....CHAOS has gone on for long enough!

    Wish me luck!

    Hello,

Just aa quick post really as MIA for two reasons, my phone is chewing data again for some reason, plus not de-richarding at the moment as having a bit of ti$e out from it and focusing on getting things a bit more organised for the winter. It is really misty/foggy here now I have moved to the coast, but I have the most amazing smell of sea wafting in the house. When I got out of the car this morning after finishing work I was hit by this lovely sea smell.

Anyhow, why i'm posting.....candle making. I jave been doing this for years with old candle bits. If you want to make ones that look a bit different (sorry if this has already been posted) cut different colours into chunks. Melt your main colour, and keep putting different coloured chunks into whatever mould you are using. Gives a different pattern finish. This also cuts down the cooling time too.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Yaaay. A charity bag came throught he door today. It is for clothes, shoes and handbags. I am going to put as much in it as possible, and I have listed some bits for selling.
That should clear some much needed space.
