Thank you so much feelingfestive. There are some excellent current accounts that pay interest (better interest than most savings accounts). I must warn you the aim to be mortgage free is incredibly addictive! You pop to the shops and pick things up, then the "do I need it? Do I want it? Can I get it cheaper online? Can I get it through quidco?" Pops into your head, and you end up putting it back and thinking "no that can be an additional top up to the mortgage.
It's amazing what a huge difference, a small overpayment makes, to both interest on the mortgage, and reducing the term.]Mortgage 1. At start £46,000, may 1996 jan 11 £27363.58  Dec 11 £25,289.00 December 12 £21,882.68

Just finished your diary and wanted to say well done for making such good progress with your mortgage. I'll admit to being slightly (ok hugely) jealous of your lovely low figure though! Changed an old flexaccount, into one of those flex direct accounts, transferred £2,500 into it yesterday, so the balance is about £2,558.
Looking forward to getting 5% interest on the first £2,500 of my balance.
Another account to add to the flipping and switching list come payday!]Mortgage 1. At start £46,000, may 1996 jan 11 £27363.58  Dec 11 £25,289.00 December 12 £21,882.68

I think I must have done something wrong this month, there is less than a week to go before payday and I still have money left in the "to spend" account?? Visa bill paid the other day too!
The ongoing hmrc saga, I was meant to get a response by 14th, it was June, no response arrived. Spoke to some guy in the Edinburgh call centre, who promised me he would call me Wednesday 19th at 9am!
Call didn't occur until 10, but he said a calculation had been done, and a letter posted on Monday 17th. Due to data protection, he was unable to disclose the contents???
It's now Saturday, and no letter received, and no credit into the bank account. Do these guys use the same delivery company as vistaprint or h and m??
I could really do with that overpayment returned. ;(]Mortgage 1. At start £46,000, may 1996 jan 11 £27363.58  Dec 11 £25,289.00 December 12 £21,882.68

Got a coding notice from hmrc saying I owed them money, spent an hour on the phone to the 'helpline' I use that term loosely. After a few hours on google, and viewing numerous pages from the employment income manual. I am due the refund. Formal complaint letter done.
Just feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall at the moment!

It was payday on Friday, money flipped and switched, Junes mortgage overpayment goes out tomorrow! :-)
my nationwide flex direct has tracked in quidco and SHOULD be payable £70 on 16th July! Then I may attempt to open another flex direct account through topcashback ;-) £20 or so interest per month from the flex direct accounts will be very welcome!]Mortgage 1. I'm pretty sure they're only paying interest on one account.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I pay direct from my current account into my NW morgage account now (online) and seems much quicker, wish I had known how to do this before!

Hi GallyGirl I read on one of the forums on here that someone has 4 accounts, 2 making full use of the free overdraft for the year, and 2 on which the healthy 5% interest is paid! :j that is my aim :T
Hi HDK, the pessimistic MFD is October 2016, HMRC owe me in excess of £6k through an overpayment last year, but they are dragging their heels with my refund! Hopefully before December this year, I will have the capital to be able to pay off the pesky mortgage, but when First Direct are paying 6% on their new regular saver, nationwide are paying 5% and Santander 3%. It doesn't make financial sense to clear it.]Mortgage 1. At start £46,000, may 1996 jan 11 £27363.58  Dec 11 £25,289.00 December 12 £21,882.68

Ho ho ho! Had a call off hmrc today (well two calls) they seem to jump when the MP's case worker gets involved. Apologies were forthcoming for the wrong information given to me, the incorrect p800 being sent out, and the fact that they have lost a lot of information (including my bank details-latest loss) but a cheque will be with me in 7-10 days! That will make a very happy birthday! ;-)]Mortgage 1. At start £46,000, may 1996 jan 11 £27363.58  Dec 11 £25,289.00 December 12 £21,882.68
