  • Hi Fiftyeighter. You ramble here all you like hun, it`s good for you (and if anyone`s bored they won`t bother reading so don`t you worry about them!)
I`m glad you`ve had another letter from your son with an apology, and good for you replying as you did rather than just letting him think he`d turn the clock back and have you bend over backwards to help him - you`ve done enough and absorbed enough hurt, so enough!
It`s great to hear your pride in your daughter`s success, Bless her, and that your Grandson is loving towards you and wants you to stay close to him and his young family. As soon as I read that in your post I thought `WOW! - knitting!`
Other posters have mentioned doing craft stuff, and you said you used to do a lot of sewing/knitting... my thought was, how about doing knitted toys? Small amounts of yarn, oddments etc., not expensive, you`d know they were safe if you knew what went into making them, and you could get quite creative, maybe make a few family heirlooms! A 2 year old, and twins on the way, there`s an outlet for you! Just a suggestion, could fill some of those difficult evenings.
    OK, now I`m rambling...
Take care, and keep positive. x
  • Hiya emm-in-a-pickle. Thanks for replying. I,m hopefully getting out to nearest big town next Tuesday so will have a look for some cheapy wool etc. start my knitting up again. Would be nice to knit the GC and GGC some little bits. Also some cardi,s and jumpers for me, could do with a few.
Havnt been out today. It's bitterly cold. So made a great big beef stew and dumplings in slow cooker, my daughters favourite.
Want to start getting in the garden but its been so wet and cold. I love it there and I have my fish pond that my DS dug out and lined for me. Always think of him and smile when I think of him digging away. He could be so funny at times. Unintentional I might add. Lol.
  • Beef stew & dumplings sounds yum - and appropriate for the weather too. We had lamb stew & dumplings yesterday, and leftovers for tonight. Still a bit early for gardening, but it`s nice to have that to look forward to. Ours is a really wild garden, but still a lot of pleasure there - mostly watching birds on the feeders in the apple trees. At present we`ve got a foot and a half of snow, so our wild garden looks asw tidy as anyone else`s!
  • Oh blow just typed a message and its disappeared. Your garden sounds lovely Emm. I like wild gardens, it's as it should be. I havnt got the energy to do as much as I use too. The mind is willing but the body....well! Not good this getting older m'larkey. I use to have a good veg patch but can't dig so much now. The knees and the wrists complain. Lol so now I have to do container gardening. Not so much produce though.
You have a foot anda half of snow, goodness. We,ve had snow since last night but its not that much. Then again I don't think here in Essex we have such adverse weather as other places. Suppose we are lucky.
Lamb, ooh gorgeous, one of my favourite meats. But why does it have to be sooooo expensive?
I,m trying to be a good girl and economise with grocery shopping etc. I've booked and paid for a weeks holiday in Dorset in September for me, my DD and her boyfriend is coming too. I,ve saved really hard for this, so now I,m trying to save the spending money. I like a challenge though.ha ha.
I did a great big batch cook yesterday of mince. I tried for the first time to put red lentils and oats in with it and was quite shocked how much more meals I got from it. The taste was no different but I ended up with 12 individual meals of lasagne. Chilli and bolognese. I,m most impressed. So thanks to whoever the person was, on the OS thread. There are so many good tips on that site. Lots I,ve already done for years. (It's my age you know.lol.) and others that are new to me.
Well best shut up and get these poor dogs out for a walk. It's dreadful out there but hey the fresh air and exercise will do me good. Hugs to everyone.
  • Hi Fiftyeighter.
I only buy lamb when it`s got one of those pretty yellow stickers on!! In fact, that goes for most of my meat buys, then I freeze it till needed. You`re right about the useful stuff to learn on these boards, too. The most useful thing I learned was to cook swede whole in the microwave then scoop out the innards, no dangerous peeling/chopping. I told my veg man this and he`s told all his customers, says he`s never sold so many swedes as he does now! I`ve not tried the oats & lentils thing with mince, but it`s on my `try-it` list. Probably a lot healthier than just mince, too.
We`re still snowed in, and it`s still coming down thick, but we`re well stocked up and managing to keep the birdfeeders refilled. My poor old Daftie-dog loves the snow but this lot is a bit too deep for wobbly back legs (and Mine!) so she`s not going far to do her outdoor duties.
It`s great that you`ve got a holiday booked to look forward to.
We usually go for May or September, but nothing planned yet for this year. We were just starting to think about it at the end of January but then I got ill so everything put on hold for last 2 months! Anyway, now I`m all diagnosed and decided (long story, have already bored folks on the `My home is a mess` board) and going in for op (`de-clutter!`) in 2 weeks. Hope we`ll be able to plan a little `getaway` after I`m back to what passes for normal...
I`ve done a big jar of pickled eggs today for OH to snack on, and put a chicken in the oven, but not much else apart from looking out of the window at the birds..and the snow!
Hope you stay snow-free. Take care. x
  • Oh Emm, I,m so sorry your unwell. I hope it's nothing bad and you get well very soon. You poor thing. I saw that about the swede thingy, will be trying that next time I buy one. It's difficult for me to get whoopsies. I have to shop online. The nearest Mr T or Asda is 12 miles away and I don't have a car. A friend and I sometimes go by bus but can't get very much in my little trolley. I also end up with my hips hurting....poor old thing aren,t I?
I,ve been watching all the poor people and sheep etc on the tv. How dreadful. I don't know where you are but I take it you must be having the same awful weather. We have snow and its very icy and cold but nothing like that.
We havnt been on holiday for 9 years unless you count 3 days I spent in Jersey last year with my DD and niece. It was lovely but not long enough. It's a gorgeous place. Been up to see my sisters a couple of times in Manchester. I miss them dreadfully especially the baby of the family. Well she,s now 51. I hope you mange to get a nice break once you are recovered from the op. I wish you all the best.
Well today is the start of my time alone with my daughter. My partner and I only live together for the weekend. It's a stupid situation really. I no I don't really love him anymore but I can't seem to break free. I suppose I,m scared I,m going to be a lonely old woman. And at least I have a few cuddles this way. I,m cruel really. I knowi should let him go but I don't.
I,m rambling again. But it feels so good to be able to write these thoughts down even if its only me reading them.
Sending hugs to everyone and lots of positive thoughts to you Emm-in-a-Pickle.
  • Hi Fiftyeighter.
Thanks for the kind wishes and hugs - I`m not so bad at the moment, just having to be really careful what I do. I`ve got this massive cyst, I`m like a pregnant elephant! Not painful now though it was when it started. It`s a major op because they`re going to take out all the redundant `lady bits` at the same time. One day maybe my clothes will fit again!! Ha!

I really don`t see any harm in your `weekends only` thing with your partner, if he`s ok with that. Not being `in love`but appreciating cuddles and companionship at the weekends while you both still have your own space doesn`t sound cruel at all. Break free if the weekends are making you unhappy, but - are they? You say you should `let him go` - but does he want to go? I think he`d have gone without you telling him to if that was what he wanted. I suspect he feels just as you do, and would be lonely without your weekends! Yes, it`s good to write your thoughts down like this, but if it ain`t broke don`t fix it!
We`ve still got big heaps of snow everywhere, but the roads are passable and it`s stopped snowing except for little light flurries now & again. Makes us appreciate the log fire at night though!
    Take care, ((Hugs)).

I would suggest the following website to you:-

    www.famanon.org.uk

This is for families of drug users, regardless of whether they are in Recovery or not.

They have a saying:- "Remember the 3 Cs":-

You didn't Cause it, you can't Control it and you can't Cure it.

This website is for your own Recovery as anyone who has had any dealings with drug use in their family knows how soul-destroying it can be.

You don't have to register, but I would recommend having a read of some of the threads there. Good luck with your own recovery.
As my Mum always said "Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves"
  • Thanks UnionGirl. I know there is a lot of help out there for those affected by drugs etc. would you believe I spent 5 years working with addicts and there families. I believe that there is a addictive personality in our family. 3 of my brothers, younger than me died from addiction. I watched my last brother die 2 years ago from hepatitis. It took a year for him to die. It was crucifying for all of us left. He was 6 ft 5 ins tall, gorgeous and funny when he was clean. He was so bloated but his face was skeletal. Where had my brother gone. It's a terrible disease. Strange though my mum and dad were teetotal and as far as I know never had addictions. There were 7 boys and 8 girls. 3 have died, 1 still has a drug addiction and 1 has a gambling addiction. But none of the girls drink. Well I have if I,ve gone to a party. But I,m not a drinker. The other girls don't drink at all and never have.
I,ll be telling my life story next. I don't think people will be interested in my doom and gloom. Lol. I do have lovely things in my life, honest, and I am gratefull to not be as sad as some. Thank you for your kind words and I will contact some ex co workers in that field.
  • Hiya Emm-in-a-pickle. You poor thing. What us poor women have to go through at times. Hopefully you,ll be well soon. Just think by the time we get our summer you,ll be parading about in a bikini. Seriously I do wish you all the best and hope the op and recovery go well. I,m sure it will. You are brave.
My other half and I broke up about 2 years ago, I wanted him to leave. He,s quite a self centred person really and we had problems. Could never feel he was there for me. It seemed I spent so much time making him feel better. But in lots of ways he can be a good bloke and I do care for him. About 6 mths ago we started to spend time together and now we spend the weekends together. Your right it works for both of us. Though I don't think I,d ever want him here full time. I expect he feels the same. But it's good for my DD so we are probably all getting comfort from this way of life.
My DGS who is just 2 can't say grandad and keeps calling him dum dum. Lol. Through the words of a child. Ha ha. Reminds me of the funny things children come out with. Years ago when mine were tiny I was busy and my then 4yr old kept asking for a sandwich. I said in 5mns. He kept on and on. In the end I said you will have to have patience. He then said "I don't want patience, I want jam" . Bless, in some ways I wish they could stay like that for ever.
