Hi everyone. I stumbled across this forum and it looks like the kind of thing I need. Can someone please explain the basics for me - I'm getting a bit confused about the marathon and team challenges etc. I currently exercise 1.5 hours a day and limit my calories to 1500 per day in order to create a calorie deficit...I've lost 9lb in 5 weeks but haven't lost anything at all this past 10 days so need to try something different...:(
Hi Debrac - welcome to our thread :j:j
We run a number of challenges each month - there's a lose 5lb in a month challenge which is the same each month, and then we also have an exercise challenge each month and a team challenge each month.
This month the exercise challenge is a Eurovision song contest pub crawl - so you log your exercise (either miles or time spent exercising) and I'll convert it and add it to the chart and see how far across Europe you travel in the month.
This months team challenge is May Queens v Morris Dancers. Pick which team you wish to join and let me know your starting weight via private message (no one else will ever know) so that I can work out the teams % loss over the month - the team with the largest % loss wins.
You don't have to join any challenges, or just join 1 or 2 (or all of them).
Keep posting as we're all very friendly, I do the weight chart very late on a Wednesday night so you can post your result by 10pm on Wednesday and I'll add it to the chart.
Have you worked out how many calories you should be eating if you weren't on a diet?
You can check here:

If you don't eat enough calories you won't lose weight (I wouldn't cut more than 15% from your non diet calories), also check you're getting enough sleep and drinking enough water and that you take rest days from your exercise too.0 -

That sounds perfect! I would love to join your group!
Got weighed this morning and I have put on 1lb!! Don't know how it's even possible as I had a calorie deficit of 6,900 calories over the past 7 days
I'm definitely doing something wrong though. I use an exercise bike every day (45 minutes morning and 45 minutes evening) and do get slightly sweaty and slightly out of breath so I think I'm doing that bit right. I never have a day off though... maybe that's where I'm going wrong
I did check my basal metabolic rate and should be eating around 2200 calories a day and I have restricted this to 1500 a day - is this too much of a reduction?
I drink loads of water so don't think it's that...
I get so dejected when I feel like I'm doing everything possible and nothings happening
Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you0 -
Debrac~I'm no expert but I dont think you are eating enough while you are doing that amount of excercise.I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. I agree that seems too few calories.
15% cut is the most that is recommended - although I'm no expert either - based on the rate of 2200 you posted you should be eating no less than 1870 calories to stop your body going into starvation mode.
I'd up your calories for a week or 2 and see how it goes as it may take a few weeks for your body to realise that you're not starving it and let you lose weight.0 -
Thanks for the advice - I'm going to try to eat a little more and see what happens this week. I've spent 30 years dieting on and off (I'm 46 now) but I've still got so much to learn
I'm more motivated to lose weight than I think I've ever been so it's really frustrating that it's not happening as fast as I want it to
Wish me luck! From today my daily calorie target is 18000 -
Hi Debrac and welcome, new calorie count of 1800 sounds like a good idea, good luck!0

I'm the same Debrac - I'm a couple of years younger than you and have been dieting since I was 11.
What I've learnt over the last year or so turned everything I thought I knew about dieting on it's head - everyone tells you cut calories, so you do - and still you don't lose weight.
I've come to accept that it's took me 40 odd years to get this body - I'm not going to get the body I want in 6 weeks. You have to really accept it more as a way of life that happens to have a side effect where you lose weight rather than a diet that makes you lose weight while life passes you by.
Don't give up - 1lb can be caused by something as simple as eating with salt in so you retain water.0 -
Yay! I have lost the 1lb I put on yesterday plus another 1/2 lb :j
It goes against everything that I thought I knew about losing weight but after eating an extra 250 calories yesterday my weight has dropped for the first time in 11 days!
Thank you everyone for the advice and reassurance
I would love to join the 5lb in a month challenge and also the Eurovision pub crawl please. My exercise in the past 7 days has totalled 10.5 hours on my exercise bike, plus a two hour brisk walk at the weekend so 12.5 hours this week for me! :A Total weight loss 1/2 lb0 -
Hello everybody,
STS.
There were a few days of nicer weather so managed to do 7 hours and 38 minutes (gardening only). It wasn't as therapeutic as I expected but still jobs getting done and many more yet. Also, done the usual cycling. Today have not exercised at all; feel drained somewhat. Will have to "bounce back" tomorrow. Good Luck all.0
