    Hello.

I am quite overweight and I have had enough of it. I am going to change my diet to a calorie controlled one and exercise. However, I am just not sure about joining a gym. I would have time (before work) to go to a gym. What is everyone's thoughts?

What do you do to exercise?

    Welcome to our lovely thread.
Only join gym if you know that you will go.
What kind of exercise might you enjoy & stick to?
That is maybe a starting point.
I don't do too much on the exercise front.
I go out on my trike in good weather.
I go to yoga & the gym on a fairly regular basis(yawn)

Thanks! I have about 7 stone to lose but I have decided I really need to lose it this time. I have started walking to work - 45 mins walk to work. I am going to do as much walking as possible. I think I would go the gym but then I cannot walk to work (would have to drive, not got time to do both)

Being overweight, I am a bit worried about going to the gym with all the fit and healthy people there. Am worried about feeling very self conscious.

Well why don't you do the walking at the moment?
Then when you feel more comfortable you could think about the gym?
Don't think about loosing 7 stone.
Break it into small chunks at a time.
    Maybe 1/2 a stone at a time?
Are you going to a class at all?

No I have been to classes before (Rosemary Conley) a long time ago and just cannot make that commitment now, they are evenings which is difficult with commitments at home. So, I am hopefully going to do this alone!

Think you right, stick with the walking for now and then see. Like the idea of breaking it down, 7 stone sounds so daunting!

If you do decide to join a gym, make sure you like it.

I have been a member of 3 in as many years, and now that i am a member of the fanciest one, it is amazing how much more often i go.

It also helps if it is convenient. The one i am a member of now is under my work, so i try and go before work, however, if i don't get up in time, i can go at lunch or after work.

It also has a large number of classes, so that i can keep it interesting :)

Welcome to the thread :) I don't do a gym as I can't commit the time due to other commitments and also I prefer to exercise alone (yes we all get hot & sweaty but I go beetroot purple too). I do Lesley Sansone DVDs at home - she does different length workouts from 20 mins to over an hour and different levels of difficulty so you can always find one to fit into your day. I've also done 30 day shred from Jillian Michaels in the past although that's hard on my knees sometimes.
  • -4lb for me this week.

I'm very self conscious and tight so a gym has never appealed to me at all. I'm part way through losing the same amount and it's the little steps at first, day by day - in everything - "that little bit of extra effort" rather than "that little extra food won't harm". The way I've done it this time (I did it in 2010 just to put it all back on again) is to have a slow and steady target of a few pounds per week, even if it's 1 pound that's still 3 stone 10 pounds gone in a year. Everyone gets caught up on chasing numbers though. As for exercise at the moment I walk for about half an hour at lunch or before work, depending on footwear or blisters and then in the evening a dedicated 15 mins on the cross trainer as part of this 57.50mi monthly challenge from a page or two back. Lots of walking on a weekend. I don't know how true it really is, but I've always read that about 80% of losing weight is food. Oh and keep a food diary, it makes your very aware of what you eat.

I would also say track what you eat. Write down everything that passes your lips. :)
