  • for me the question should be "what do you iron?"

I haven't seen my iron in months; I smooth and fold. Luckily niether the OH or I wear a lot of things that need to be ironed.
I learnt the smooth and fold technique from my MIL and taught it to my Mum who gave over ironing everything including socks!

Please guys, tell me what you do so that you dont iron. If I dont iron my clothes I look just like I have not ironed my clothes what the heck is the secret?

Yeah, thats what I'm thinking, how on earth can you NOT iron your clothes. I tumble dry bedding, towels & nightwear so as I don't have to iron them (mind you tumble drying is much nicer for towels than line drying anyway). I also tumble dry underwear & socks. But I iron EVERYTHING else & there is loads Jeans, shirts, t-shirts, jogging bottoms, tops, blouses, trousers, dresses, skirts, everything!!!!
Some people put that they don't iron jeans, t-shirts or jogging bottoms, how can you not iron these?
Without sounding rude you must look crumpled.

As a offshoot question, do you iron as it comes in from the line or when you wear it. I iron as it comes in from the line, so all the wardrobes & drawers in our home contain ironed clothes. It would freak me out if I had to rummage through unironed clothes every morning to decide what to wear. But then thats just me:o

I have to agree with some others about how on earth do you NOT iron clothes, i tried this week to fold from the line and it's a nightmare, it was very time consuming, I'm not always the one to fetch the washing in from the line so I find it easier to just iron at the end week.

Can anyone offer any tips on folding?
  • how NOT to iron is simple - air the clothes on radiators to eliminate creasing, smooth out creases when they come out of the tumble drier or washing line, manmade fibres fare better than natural fibres but then some things are meant to be creased - such as crinkle type fabrics and things made out of lace, cheesecloth, seersucker, towelling are actually better unironed in my opinion as they retain a more textured appearance - maybe it would be better if we all wore velour all in one stretch suits (think telly tubby!) cos life is far too short to stand for hours ironing everything in sight - like somebody else stated, I too take home the tea towells from work on a rota basis and wash them but I refuse to iron them cos in my opinion it is totally unnecessary - I dont do it for my own tea towells so Im def not gonna do it for ones used at work and if ppl think Im lazy then so be it but I really dont see the point in ironing something that is gonna be used to dry dishes on - sadly the only trousers Ive found I didnt need to iron were ones made out of crinkle type material and school uniform shirts were the bain on my life - happily my kids are left school and perfectly capable of ironing their own clothes, as is my husband - I work full time just like they do so I dont see the need for me to iron their clothes when they are just as able as I am of doing the job for themselves - years ago tho when I did the ironing for themr they used to hang their clothes up on the floor and I might as well have saved myself the trouble in the first place cos by the time they wore them they were creased to hell - so basically my views on ironing is to do the minimum so as to not look like a dishevelled mess - its a fine balance but Im managing it just fine

    skirts, everything!!!!

All my clothes are dried via a clothes line or around the fire. I did try a tumbledryer once or twice but found that clothes HAVE to be ironed unless bought out slightly damp.

    As for looking crumpled...

I show dogs around the country and presentation is an important part of the process both for the dogs and for me who is in the ring and "also on show". Not wanting to let a beautiful turned out dog down I try to be well presented.
At a recent show during a conversation with an overseas lady I was told that I 'was the best dressed english person she had seen in the ring' and that I always had "style and was well turned out'. (Yes my head did swell with the praise:D )
Of course I never mentioned that I hadn't a clue where my iron lives and that all my clothes come from charity shops
  • I don't iron much because I hate ironing, but fortunately my husband finds it therapeutic (I think it's the 'gadget' steam iron we have). He irons everything except socks and pants and delicate fabrics that aren't supposed to be ironed. This morning he told me off as I was about to put an 'unironed' vest top into my wardrobe - the type that is stretchy and you wouldn't see the creases once it was on anyway - but, no, it has to be ironed. He tends to do it all in one or two big loads and there's nothing quite like climbing into a bed of freshly laundered and ironed bedding! So yes, a husband who likes ironing is fab - but I do all the gardening and DIY - so fair's fair!

Well were all different thats for sure.

I have tried "smoothing" out after my clothes come off the line and every other tip on here, but my clothes still need ironing imo.

Then following another thread on here on how much washing people do, absolutely astounds me!!!!! I think if I washed as much and as often as some folk I would be to exausted to pick up an iron.

As I said, were all different and probably if we all stood in a line we would all look and smell ok.

This thread has made me laugh.

Personally, I do iron all of my clothes but not underwear, towels, bedding, tea towels.

My dear old Nan however was obsessed with ironing. She ironed everything, and I mean everything. Every week when she drew her pension at the Post Office she came straight home and ironed it as she liked to have nice crisp looking notes in her purse!!! Then there was the time when she tried to iron a lycra swimming costume (she burnt a hole in it). My family never let her forget that one.
