Good old Lanoline. I used it on my little ones, and it always worked.

I put it on quite thickly, then put a piece of gorse, or a nappy liner over it to stop it coming off onto the nappy, and to protect it from the urine. With mine it soon cleared up. :)

If the nappy rash is red, shiny and "bubbly" or the skin is starting to peel, then it's probably thrush and you should see a GP for a proper diagnosis and treatment, the prescription creams will heal it almost overnight.

My son only ever got a nappy rash when he was teething and it was always caused by thrush. Even my GP couldn't explain why teething would cause thrush but it's apparently very common. No amount of barrier creams will make any difference, but one enlightened HV told me to try using my breastmilk to clean his bottom when he had thrush and it did seem to be more soothing than using water.

Oh, and Vaseline is also a by-product of the petrol industry, the generic name is petroleum jelly or soft paraffin. I personally wouldn't use it anywhere near a baby's skin, it's ok for sore noses but not bottoms!

A lot of people are allergic to lanolin, so I'd suggest caution with it just in case, especially on open sores or irritated skin.

I was always told teething resulted in sore bottoms.

Of course now, common sense coming tothe fore, it has got to be a load of rubbish and not connected at all.

Is there any scientific evidence to back it up.

Ah, I always thought it was rubbish and was told the same by many GPs, HV etc. Then I took my eldest to a paedeatrician and she, very sensibly, said "of course it has a connection. When a tooth is coming through it creates an open wound. Just think about all of the things babies put into their mouths and you can see why almost all of them get some sort of tummy upset. They're actively rubbing dirt and bacteria into open wounds"

Which made complete sense to me.

Just edited to add, the tummy upset (sometimes mild, sometimes bad, tends to cause the nappy rash)

Cotton wool and warm water instead of wipes and if you're still breastfeeding, express some milk onto a cotton pad and wipe him over with it every change. My son had awful nappy rash the first couple of weeks of his life and I was using metanium which didn't help much, as soon as I used sudocrem on top of the metanium (thin layers), breastmilk and letting him kick about without his nappy on once a day it cleared right up.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

I use metanium on my LO, I find sudocream doesn't 'cover' so well when baby has a sore bum.
