Fine about the 'less service' - I still stick with the point that savings accounts are for saving and not having direct debits and standing orders or using a debit card on a savings account for paying for shopping in sainsbury's.

Barclays took over woolwich's banking side of things and that means you get what barclays offers - if that isn't what you want leave.

I left and am trying to encourage my parent to as well but my reasons weren't for this changeover.

Hi exbarclay, you could not have direct debit or standing orders on a Woolwich Card Saver account, neither can you have them on the other Banks and Buidling Societies savings accounts that have debit cards. Some savings account allow easy access to your money, what is the difference between withdrawing your money from a branch counter or an ATM and withdrawing your money to make a purchase at the Point of Sale using a Debit Card? I would have thought it saved money as you did not need to carry the change back to the bank to pay it back in, so were likely to save more, as you would not be tempted to spend it. My opinion is that your arguement in relation to savings accounts and debit cards is flawed. James

My woolich mortgage has now been transfered to Barclays, if I had known that when I re-mortgaged with them last year I would of gone some where else.

I now cannot view my mortgage balance on line anymore, i rang the Woolich and she gave me the online help number - i got through to India eventually and its because "Barclays are only able to show details of Woolwich mortgages if you have an Offset mortgage, or had an Openplan sweeping arrangement at the time".

I dont understand this - re-mortgage time.

  • exbarclay- The point is when asking the woolwich for an account to have my tax credit and so on paid into that was the account that i was given with an electron card, they knew it was not for saving but for everyday living, but barclays dont want to offer me an alternative account with an electron card just a silly bit of blue plastic that is as good as useless to me.
Now i cannot pay anything over the phone, nor pay by card,or internet, in the shops, etc, and get a bus to travel miles away to get my hands on my money at a Barclays atm. (also i do not like walking around with all the money)
Barclays should offer the exact service/card as we were originally getting as we DID NOT ask for this ridiculous and poorer account.

Rant over  (wife of whitehartman)

Thankyou for your comment, Fine about the Direct Debits or Standing orders if that is correct, I don't claim to know everything and cetainly don't want to. Once I am finished with them which is very soon I couldn't care.

As regards to the ATM, Cash Over counter and Point of sale there are some quite large differences. ATM and Cash Over Counter are pretty much the same but payments at points of sale undergo a different mechanism of authorisation and are considerably different how a bank sees it.

I accept what you are saying about spending and saving and your opinion is just as valid as mine but I believe a current account should be for day to day or even irregular spending where as a savings account should be for saving and should any money need to be taken out it can be transferred into the current account.

Fine I can see what you are saying there - the if the Woolwich had given you a current account in the first place this mess wouldn't have happened.

Once again not sticking up for Barclays, they are only replacing a savings account with a savings account of their own. Not their fault Woolwich offered this service Barclays don't.

The way I see it they don't care if they loose some customers, they've still gained a huge amount that will stay with them and increase the profits of their company.

this whole transfer from woolwich to barclays has been handled so poor;y, it is amazing................they have sent out loads of EXPENSIVE blurb in the last YEAR, yet when it comes to the ACTUAL transfer-over date, they CANNOT send out on tiem the CRUCIAL STUFF...........I.E. THE DEBIT CARDS !!!.............so, here we are at 19/7/07 with no card ( but the cheque book came a month ago.!!! )...............we have however, received the STUPID cashcard for the asavings account ( with the woolwich it was a SUPERIOR electron debit card )
Therefor, Barclays have BREACHED the conditions of the changeover, as they said we would recieve EQUIVALENT OR BETTER account/ cards.

So, I will be taking legal action on this...........

Hi exbarclay,i know you're not sticking up for them (it is hard to)but as posted previously i feel also that the cards are Not equivalent by any means and totally agree with welling57:T

Just an update on my last post here

I received a letter from Barclays yesterday informing me that theres nothing that can be done to send me a new card and all I can do is open a new account with them. They have paid a mere £20 into my account to 'compensate' me for my troubles.

Time to move on I think. I'm going to struggle to open a current account due to bad credit but I desperately need a debit card so I can pay my bills. I heard you can get an Electron with the Co-op with no credit check, can anyone confirm if this is true?

    Many thanks

    Joe
