getting fed up with ebay's new star rating

  • I was considering re-opening both of my eBay shops after taking a break from selling for around a year. I'd always used the shops to promote my websites, and was debating whether the last fee hike and the reduced shops visibility made this still worthwhile. It was the introduction of the star ratings that finally decided for me that this was a strategy I was going to pursue no longer.

It's quite well known that the majority of people will always make their feelings known more loudly about an unsatisfactory experience, however slight (particularly if they can do so relatively anonymously) than they will about an uneventful experience that goes just as they expected. Though there are usually more of these, they seldom get a mention. That's human nature.

I agree with the comment that the stars probably won't be around for long, but I don't believe they've been completely pointless. Demonstrating as they do that eBay actually think that showing their sellers in the worst possible light is GOOD business practice, they've finally opened my eyes to just how damaging a relationship with eBay can be. Sure, the stars will probably soon be history, but eBay's next 'bright' idea could be even worse.

With the best will in the world, things will occasionally go wrong in a business and its reputation may suffer for it. I take full responsibility for my screw-ups, but I'm not about to PAY another business for the privilege of presenting mine badly.

I'll still list now and again on eBay, but I can't see it ever playing a part in my plans that's anywhere close to the size of the one it once had.
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!

The problem is only the buyers who aren't happy leave the stars rating, others don't bother so the ratings will only go down not up. It should either be a compulsory part of the feedback or not there at all.
