What do you do with fresh YS bargains you can't freeze- i.e. how fussy are you about use by dates?
I don't buy milk or anything cream based. I have bought things like prepared sandwiches for 30p and ate them the following day. Ready meals are OK for a couple of days. I even cheat at work and tip the contents of a RM into a tuppaware box and microwave it and claim it I made it myself:D I dare not to mention I bought it for 50p two days ago. Veggie ones last another day.
Agree with the poster about coleslaw going fizzy.
Strawberries and raspberries I have to eat that day or they go mouldy. I have discovered that putting them in jelly extends their shelf life. I don't make smoothies and they probably will be fine the following morning.
Cakes such as the Galaxy cake bars, Mr Kiplings last ages as they are individually wrapped. I found a box of Fabulous Bakin' Boys flapjacks in my cupboard with a Jan date on them. Still taste great. If they had icing on them, they would be gone off by now.
Eggs are sometimes in the reduced as there is a week gap between display and use by dates. They last 10 days after the UB date.0 -
meat only for the freezer for me. yoghurt is fine for 2-3 days.milk is fine 2-3 days.i don't use eggs after their use by date, but again that's me.
Eggs don't have a 'use by' date- just best before. There is an easy peasy way to test whether they're OK or not. Put them in a bowl of water- if they float to the top- they're off. If they lay on their sides, they're fresh as a daisy, if they stand up on their end they're not so fresh but perfectly safe to eat. Obviously you can also use your nose. Eggs can go for 2 weeks after their BB date!
