Will this give him a possible opportunity to dump O2 BB without any penalties?

If he's past the cooling off period (can't remember if it's 7 days or 14 days) then no.

However phoning up now should see him offered a new 12 months contract with 12 free months.

I have just dumped O2 in favor of Plusnet.
So far, I have been getting download speeds of 74mb on an 80mb fibre line.
When BT Openreach came to install, he showed me the capable figures of the line, which were 86.2mb download and 33mb upload!! All this is costing me £20 per month.

Might be worth a go, if you are in a fibre enabled area. I am told that they don't traffic shape.

As pointed out by jem16, it's a 12m minimum term. So how about you check your facts first before you abuse people on here?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I've just been talking to a friend who is getting peed off with O2 broadband's unreliability and is considering going back to virginmedia(I told him switching to O2 was a bad idea in the first place). The problem is that he is just into the 2nd of a 12(or 18) month contract. It was only days after signing up with them that the sky announcement was released. Will this give him a possible opportunity to dump O2 BB without any penalties?

He will still be tied in for 12 months unless t&c's change.

I've been with O2 bb for many years and have found them very reliable.

Funny your friend should say that. I've been with O2 for about 4 years and can count on one hand the outages we have suffered over that time, then, about 2 months ago it all changed.

7.15pm of thereabouts most nights it went down, this then moved to frequent outages in the day. Puzzled we called them and O2 assured us that we'd 'only' had SEVEN outages in the last 24 hours! ONLY?! They told us that was not unusual. Well, it was very unusual from having such a stable service.

It's still exceptionally unstable and I'm more than happy to leave now. I guess a cynic would think something has been going on in the background for a few weeks. We have certainly noticed a difference. 12 months of free poor service isn't worth the hassle to me.

It would be fine if the only forthcoming change in the ts and cs is they just replace "o2" with "sky".

But to be cautious we ought to now be getting a hard copy of the o2 contract (whilst it remains available) to have just in case we need it to refer to in the future.

There are changes taking place already.

    Converged core is cancelled.
Sky appear to be talking about migrating people to their network
Sky staff training on the billing system at O2
Sky it appears will demand a sky line ... This is separate from your bb contract - seems this makes it not their fault if you can't get the service, so no break clause

Less clear is if Sky will remove discounts. They can though quite easily.

Also hard to workout if these changes will happen quickly or slowly. I'm thinking they will happen quickly, but they tell us the opposite.

Seems if you want to get out do it now whilst its O2 otherwise get a free year off sky - but remember its not free, just discounted to make it free.

I've still got a week of cooling off, this might be a deal breaker for m tbh. I am in a 12 month contract with BT for my phone line, they're not going to pay the penalty for me are they?
