Good question macman. I'm currently out of contract and also have the £5 monthly discount. Does that mean I will have to take out a new Sky contract at higher prices.

I also read on another forum that Sky customers have to take out a phone contract with them to be able to have Broadband. Will this apply to O2 customers.

I am thinking of moving to PlusNet, have heard good things about them. Can anybody here give feedback on Plusnet.

A real shame about O2, as others have said, their customer service is excellent.

    * - Unless the contract you signed had a clause specifying that in the event of a takeover you would not have the option to terminate (did O2 see this coming and surreptitiously insert such a clause?). However, even if the contract DID say that, there are numerous complex contract law rules/rulings which MAY deem that clause uneforceable (was significant attention brought to the clause, etc). My bet is no such clause was in the contract (although there probably is now!).

Companies generally try to avoid consumer law cases. They are costly, the cost of losing one can be immense and courts have to consider the relative power of the two parties (and the law heavily favours consumers in most disputes anyway).

My bet is, a reply to the letter (informing you of the change of ownership of 02 Broadband to Sky) stating you do not consent to the change in contractual obligations will result in them releasing them from your contract.

Just wait and see is the game to play if you try and cancel (like i did today you will get a mac code if requested and this message)

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] if you decide to leave. It expires on date: 31/03/2013.

If it expires and you still want to leave, call us and we'll get you a new one. If you'd like to stay, then you don't need to do a thing.

Don't forget our seven day notice period. As long as you wait seven days from the date you told us you wanted to leave, we won't charge you. If you're still in a contract though, we'll have to charge you for leaving it early.

Gutted about this. I've loved being a Be customer these past few years. As usual, a good ISP gets bought out, and the service suffers. I won't get Annex M with Sky, and I won't get my static IP. I'll be jumping ship asap. Unfortunately, it looks like my only option are Virgin. No date announced for FTTC on my exchange.

Interestingly, it'll only be another fiver a month for 100/10. Even with their heaviest throttling, it'll be around the same speed as my max speed right now, syncing at 22/2.5 right now.

I'm just worried their "P2P" traffic shaping will end up slowing down FTP transfers, and I recall from being a VM customer years ago that they had some interesting routing...

Sky won't be able to do a static IP, or Annex M (2.5mbit upload). If you had one or both of them, Sky would be unable to provide the same service. I'd imagine that'd be putting you at a significant enough disadvantage to warrant a termination of the contract, no?

if sky take the equipment over they should be able to to provide what o2 has and nothing in way of speeds and uploads and offers of static IP should differ

Extremely unlikely. Sky have a "one size fits all" policy. Remember when Sky took over UKOnline a few years back? No static ip's, no fastpath and far worse support for ex-UKO customers though most of them jumped ship to BE/O2. Sky gobbled up arguably the UK's finest isp in UKO :(

I'm merely outraged. I only renewed my O2 contract a few weeks ago on the basis that I wanted O2, not anyone else. I certainly don't want anything to do with Sky, and if I have to have something to do with them, O2 will never get any business of mine again.

Has anyone got a legal expert to look over the contract or someone from a TV show to do this.

I certainly would leave if I could as it could be a long 9 months to see out with them otherwise. I want nothing to do with Sky and the poor service they provide.

Do they really want to segment their customer base like that though? Some with Annex A, some with Annex M, some with static IP, some with dynamic IP...

I'd imagine that if Sky had any intention of offering these services, they'd have been doing it by now. For people who have no alternative, I hope you're right. I'd be pretty annoyed at going from 22/2.5 to 20/1.3, and losing my static IP.

For the OP, I hope I'm right. :)

What happens, I wonder, to people with the O2 phone discount? Will it continue? Might the increase in price, if it doesn't, warrant contract termination?
