Say No to 0870!

  • An 0870 number costs £10 per month at https://www.yac.com. It doesn't replace your existing number. No mention of you making any profit from it though!
"Yac 0870 has functionality to find you across 5 numbers, send calls to UK mobiles and international numbers, customise your greetings, view call history and receive voice messages via email, all for only £10 per month."
  • 0845, 0870 and 0871 numbers are free to set up with no monthly rental at Telecoms World plc www.twplc.co.uk. For those wanting a number for their own business etc, 0845 numbers have no charge back and 0870 and 0871 produce revenue, the rate per minute depends on the number of minutes per month.

The only downside to these "mask numbers" is one has no way of knowing which number the caller dialled, therefore no way of knowing (at the time) whether or not the call is producing revenue. Also, remember to withhold your number if you call someone who has your 08 number - otherwise your 01/2 number will be released!

    Please excuse the silly question....

A Natwest customer adviser has just confused me!!

If I dial an 0800 number, and ask them to transfer me to a department that has an 0870 number, my understanding is that I would be charged nothing as I dialled in on an 0800 number.

The natwest customer adviser I just spoke to told me that I would be charged at the 0870 rate if she transferred me.

Is this the case? Hoping you can help

    Thanks

If you dial the freephone number from your landline (some mobiles charges for freephone) and they transfer you then they (NatWest) would be charged for transferring the call to the 0870.

I've heard that a few times but I just agree with them that way they are under the impression you are paying and therefore it doesn't cost them anything.

Remember, so long as you ONLY dial the freephone number and nothing else you are ok.
  • They are having you on. If you dial an 0800 number and are transferred to a department which is usually accessed by 0870 you will not be charged, as you dialled 0800 not 0870.

You are charged whatever the rate of the number you dialled originally. You dialled 0800 ....., someone put you through to somewhere else, you will still be charged nothing.

If they transferred (forwarded) you to a 09 premium rate chat line or your Auntie Flow, that would be a their expense, not yours.

Thanks so much for your quick replies.:T

That puts my mind at rest. :D

I hate 0870 and consider it such a rip off. I'll do anything not to phone it!! Shall continue with my 'can you put me through please' approach....;) :D

    Many thanks again!!

Remember don't let them know that they pay for it otherwise they will stop transferring people then, and you may have to dial it yourself then.
  • Has anybody noticed the irony of the saynoto0870.com site? Here they are helping people to avoid costly 0870 numbers, yet at the bottom of the page there are adverts encouraging people to set up their own 0870 numbers! Great site but double standards eh?

It's been mentioned many times before and is not double standards actually - the site has no control over Google - whose adverts they are.

Personally, I find it very amusing - the adverts are a great source of information about exactly how much of a rip-off 0870 (and 0844/0845/0871) numbers have been allowed to become due to the failure of the so-called regulators (Oftel - now Ofcom) to undertake their task of protecting the public.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").
