There's nothing wrong with outsourcing, it's good for developing world economies, would you rather they had less jobs, less income, less development, meaning less economic growth = lower quality of life? Sure, corporations are exploitative and will avoid regulations whever possible in favour of lower wages and harsher cheaper working conditions, but know consumers will not put up with this so there's a nice balance involved.
The anti-globalists that oppose outsourcing should concentrate on lobbying world leaders for better working standards across the world rather than arguing in favour of keeping these jobs over here.
These people do more harm than good. If there's serious human rights abuses by TNCs operating in developing countries then then these should stop.
As for the lingual issues, I've never had a problem understanding indian call center staff. Maybe the problem is alot of UK people can't speak or understand proper English? I have alot more probems understanding some northerners.
Btw these people are not racist in anyway, they're just discussing the pros and cons of outsourcing, it's healthy to discuss these issues even if people are branded racists by those who do not wish to confront important issues.
As for jobs leaving our country, well we're fortunate enough to be a knowledhe economy, and will grow likewise. Putting restrictions on the development of other countries will only slow ourselves down.0 -

I am sorry, but did you read the article? I am reffering to the bit where somebody said they spoke to an indian gentlemen with a first class engineering degree, do you honestly think that his skills would benefit the long term welfare of the indian economy if he was using his skills in a more productive way than telling you what your balance is? I would not rather they had less jobs, just more sustainable ones, engineering graduates would be of far more use to the indian economy of they were employed in more relevant roles.

I take it you have never visited a developing country, i dont think many workers in these countries would use the phrase "nice balance", these people often have little or no human rights and treated worse than Ashley Cole.

I dont think that all anti-globalists want jobs staying in there own countries, i think they are more concerned with the growth of multi nationals, i think this is more to do with the monopoly/abuse of market share than where these people work.

How will they just suddenly stop? If you cant read or write how do you know what your human rights are?

I am glad you think we are in a fortunate position, i for one will be leaving ridiculous house prices, our great empire, getting taxed through the !!!!!!, watching my son grow up to be a McDonalds employee of the month and all the other things i love about this great nation. This is not a dig at the previous post, i just felt that the development arguement had been slightly over simplified. All this because we are too tight to pay an 0870 call charge, personally i only deal with companies that dont use 0870 but add 50 pence to the price of the same product, moneysaving is all about the short term.0 -
I originally posted this as a Rant but was reminded this may be better here.
Can you believe it?! I went into a local WH Smith to see if they had any of the Bush DAB radios still on offer, sadly not. I went to the far corner of the shop and stood underneath the CUSTOMER SERVICES sign only to be ignored by the two shelf stackers. I finally gave in and went and asked one to come over to the desk and help me.
When I asked if she could phone Bristol for me to see if they had any more left I was told that they are no longer allowed to make outgoing phone calls to check stock on behalf of customers! How mad is that?
Not believing her I asked to speak to the Manager who came along and told me the same thing. I was then given a business card marked WH Smith Customer Service 0870 blahblah.....I asked why bother having a section in store if they are not allowed to help. Manager told me new rules dictate they have to give out these cards now - that is the Customer Service.
I proceeded to tell them both why I won't call 0870 and neither of them knew that was a profit line. But fancy cancelling your personal Customer Service Dept????
I stopped buying books there a long time ago - guess I will stop going in at all now.

is there any chance of a national backlash against these things
if enough customers sent unstamped mail to companies they would ahve to pay the £1+ per letter and enough of them could change firms minds
we need someone like martin to organise this.
personally I dont use firms that use these - but I still end up having to.
I find when I complain they send out a standard email automatically but when using the post I do get a response.

Martin MSE says in his comments, that Onetel charge on SOME tariffs 8p to call 0870 numbers. This is true.
Have a look at the 0870 rates on the International Tariff.8p a min at all times.24/7.365.

How much do they charge for 0870 calls ?
Why not have a @@ at at there site https://www.dialwise.co.uk.
For prices of calls to 0870 numbers go to the dropdown list and search under under United Kingdom (National) see 0844 no ( 5p a minute at all times).BT are in fact cheaper then them at Evenings and Weekends.
They can be cheaper then 18866/1899 on some tariffs eg United Kingdom(Mobile) 4p a minute,at all times. But you dont get connected direct its a dial through service. They are in fact part of the same group as 18866/1899.PF.0
