  • Im still suffering with the sickness got my antenatal appt on thursday.
Feeling rubbish all the time trying to eat - told the husband to just look out for him and the kids at meal times as when he starts cooking i start with the nausea.
Managing to keep more and more fluids down so thats something to be thankful for, but by golly waters boring and cold. Little bean really doesnt like mushrooms, brown bread, fruit and lucozade is questionable.
Sometimes i like to imagine that im living on the breadline as a single mum with 3 children to feed and clothe, bills to pay and very little time to myself........ then i wake up and realise im a princess with prince charming by my side and a lovely white castle........ oh wait

afternoon - Im just whacked! Feel very sorry for those of you with sickness - hasnt hit me (yet!) but mindful Im only just 6 weeks. Havent made midwife appt yet - intend to phone this week.

Query for those over 35 (Is that the magical cut off?) I will be 38 when I have this one.... Are you all having the triple test? (Thats all we are offered in my area) I dont intend to as I had a high risk result on my last pregnancy at the age of 33....worried myself for the whole pregnancy and fair to say it ruined the experience. Is 38 that old nowadays?? Hm....

Ah - I ended up paying for the quad test last time - but didnt get a much better result with that! Strange how different areas offer different things - you would think that everyone would be offered the same routine testing

Hi there - I'm feeling similar!

I was 35 last time and my results came back as low risk, but was asking about the odds last week and it turns out that at 35 (without factoring in weight, nuchal scan results and blood test results) the risk is something like 1/700, whereas at 38 (which I am now) it's 1/350. Apparently high risk is anything greater than 1/150, so I'm feeling pretty close to the boundary and not sure if I want to have the test and then stress about it for the rest of the time.

Its a quandary isnt it? Our authority dont offer the nuchal scan - its straight bloods. I was 1/65 last time so I see little point in worrying myself silly again - though am starting to wind myself up already about not having it!!
Glad theres another 38 year old around :)

Our hospital doesn't offer nuchal scan either. With my pregnancy 10 years ago, I opted out of triple test - figured it wasn't 100% anyway plus amino injection can apparently cause miscarriage. As I was only 27 and already had healthy 7yo daughter, we opted out. My best friend due 6wks after me, had gone through tests and all came back clear - her daughter was born with Downs Syndrome - she was 26 and already had 2 healthy boys. I'll opt out again as I will love baby no matter what and know i could cope with whatever but I will be 37 in July so know the odds are against me this time round, which is scary.

Strangely my hospital didn't offer the nuchal scan last time, but does this time - I'm not sure if that'll improve my chances or not!

My gut feeling is that I'll have the test, then if it's high will prepare myself for the chance that I might have a baby with Down's by reading around it, finding out about support groups etc. I'm the kind of person who likes to know everything, so not sure if I'd be kicking myself if I didn't do it.... Oh I DON'T KNOW!!

    Theres always something with pregnancy.
Sweaty Betty - I think I would be more inclined to do it if the nuchal scan was involved. I may yet end up paying privately to have that done (if all goes to plan). I turned down the amnio last time which is why I spent the whole pregnancy in turmoil.
AngelMommy - thats what I like to think - if you read the stats its a miracle we got pregnant at our age anyway!!

Sophiasmum - my friend has coped amazingly and my god-daughter is a darling; always so happy! She may not have a 'normal' life but she's loved and loves back just like any other child. For me- I had 2 girls then we tried for 6 1/2 yrs to fall pg. Unfortunately we lost that one in Nov and fell with this one in Jan so this baby (fingers crossed he/she makes it) is a little miracle for us. We would cope somehow and how I see it is that baby could be born perfectly healthy then illness/accident could change all that. My close friend was pg last year and went in for routine app - urine test showed something unusual and she was rushed into theatre at 29wks. Both mum and baby v poorly - baby touch & go for weeks but now is ok, thank goodness.

I do really understand why others want the tests etc - I've worked with lots of children with difficulties so prob doesn't worry me as much as it should. However, I'm also a massive worrier - if they gave me a not-great result, I would be very upset and expecting the worst. Stress causes me to be very ill do avoiding it at all costs. Nuchal scan sounds good - I had not heard of that one.
