Just a mention but for anything technical including software, upgrades, etc. THIS is the forum to use.

It'd be more sensible to keep all of the technical follow-ups info in one place, I think we would all agree.:)

It'll save having to switch back & forth between threads.

Well my niece's lobster arrived this morning. Quick delivery.
I had to set it up for her (she's only 9 y/o) - plus it gave me a chance to play around with the phone.
The TV reception is actually pretty damned good provided you're sitting in one place and not wandering around ... it only takes a couple of seconds to power up the tv function ... watched the ITV News, Hollyoaks & that BBC1 antique show that's on over lunchtime ... very impressive.
The DAB radio reception is just spectacular. Tuned in 43 stations ... and sound quality was as impressive as you can get with a dinky little set of earphones which doubles as the aerial.
It does look a little odd when you look at pictures of the phone online ... it seems a funny shape ... but when you see it in the flesh it's a lot easier on the eye. It's a little bit bigger than your average moby ... but there again it isnt an average moby. Nor is it that much heavier.
Ours was a refurbished one (our logic being no point buying a minted one for a schoolgirl) ... but I have to say there's not a mark on it - it looks brand new.
And by registering the phone online it means that my sister can keep a track on who her daughter is phoning/texting ... and in this day & age that's a useful safeguard too.
And for £19.99 ? An absolute bargain.
So I've just ordered another. For me. So I can sit in the garden during the Summer and listen to comedy shows on the BBC7 radio station and watch Wimbledon on BBC1.
A huge big thanks to Ayaaz007 for spotting this one :)

    Thank you, ordered mine today.

With the PAYG sim is it a... *pay £5/£10 monthly or, *must make one phone call every 6 months?

I have Virgin TV package, could someone tell me where I need to go to get the £10 pm 300/300 contract please?

Off to pick it up tomorrow morning from the carriers as I wasn't home for the delivery (hubby missed them by 5 mins) and there wasn't enough space in the box to put my work address so it had to go to home address... then they wouldn't deliver to another address unless I called Virgin to change it (but surely that will invalidate the quidco??) Just thought it might be a nice ride out to go pick it up...

    ANYHOO

didn't have a response to the above questions, but, if anyone knows the answers I would very much appreciate knowing.

    many thanks and kind regards

The SIM comes with £5 credit on it. No further regular top ups are needed.

After the free TV period it is £5/month to watch TV, so top-ups would be needed if you wanted to watch TV.

Try contacting CS on 151 from your home phone ( that is if you have NTL/Telewest/Virgin media phone) or on-line at their website, to see if they will offer you the £10 package as an addition to your pack.

I don't think an address change would invalidate Quidco as the order tracking is done by web browser related cookies with respect to your online order, and presumably the order number, not the postal address.

Supposedly although you are on the £10 a month package you will still be required to pay for the license fee of £5 a month after the 90 day trilal period. I have take this info from HUKD.

Mine arrives this morning, thanks 0P and MUNT for advice, terrific buy.

Love the idea of using this as a sat nav, but confused as to what I need to make this function work.

Please can someone tell me the most reasonable priced GPS receiver hardware I'll need to use TomTom on it and how this will work if you aren't in a car.

    Thanks

    Georgiac,

I use this with my other HTC device and it works fine:

It's basically just a GPS device which talks to the phone via bluetooth. I find this drains the phone battery a lot faster, so you might want a car changer as well.

Think i got the gps device for about £20.

The most reasonably priced gps unit seems to be the navman from total pda here.

The navman works out around £21.xx delivered, however you can buy two for about £7 more because of google checkout and only 1 postage charge.

As for not being in a car, you can set the tomtom software to different settings for walking routes or cycling within the preferences section.

Oh and remember that you will need to factor into your costs a micro sd card for the phone aswell (should be less than £15 for a 2gb)

  • You don't need a 2gig card to run tomtom. A 1gig card is sufficient, as you're not putting the massive maps on there, as they won't even work (western and central europe .675 has just come out and it's a whopping 1.7gigs, but it's for TT6, not TT5).

Georgiac, get your gps receiver off ebay - works out cheaper. If you can pick up a holux, that would be great (it's a well respected gps receiver). You can get a 1gig micro sd card for around £7 delivered, but possibly cheaper on ebay.
