Elderly disabled Dad - laundry services?

No idea where to start with this one.

My Dad lives on his own and, for the last 20 years, hes point blank refused to get a washing machine for some reason. In the past his sister did it for him (shes older than him!), then my brothers girlfriend (they just split up).

Currently, hes doing his washing in the sink which, surely, isn't great and not easy for him.

But still he says he won't get a washing machine.... Very strange he cooks for himself, can use microwave but not this.

Admitedly, his flat doesn't have a space for washing machine but I'm sure something could be sorted.

Was considering a portable machine but chances are he'd refuse to use....

Would social services help at all? They've recently installed a shower for him because he couldn't get into bath so I guess they know about him.

(BTW - I live 30 miles away so, even though I see him a lot of weekends, its just not practical for me to do all his washing).

  • Is cost an issue? Otherwise you could simply arrange for a service wash at the local laundrette to be done?

If he can't get it there himself, then you could do a delivery and collection(deliver the next batch, and collect the last batch, buy him more clothes to cope with the lag time if necessary), or arrange for a local courier/taxi service to do it?

Cost not an issue. Not local laudrettes that I'm aware of.
  • If you can't find a local laundrette, could you try enquiring at local dry cleaners?

Some of them do take in laundry, albeit very much targeted at shirt wash and iron services. They might be flexible?

Otherwise, how about checking the local newsagents for ironing services or cleaning services, who might be flexible enough to provide a take away and wash service. A cleaning agency might also oblige for just this one service?

You could wash them yourself like this (ie take them away and do them during the week) if he had enough clothes.

Do not know where your Dad is in the UK but 'Googled' laundry services and found this, amongst many others

Have you looked in the Yellow Pages or asked around? If it's not your home area you might not be aware of them but most towns have at least one.
