Uhm, if you've read back you'll know that I've spent the past 24 hours on here moaning about strawberry-flavoured paracetamol. Your post does put things into perspective :o ((hugs))

:rotfl: I will have to read back! You can't beat strawberry calpol in my opinion! ;)

Gilly - I honestly can't praise the NHS enough at the moment, I don't think I could thank them enough for what they have done to help us already. We have a Smyths local to us and its my ds1's birthday in October so think ill have a look tomorrow thanks.

They have been great with my sis too. His nursery do makaton with him and my sister does picture cards, he misses out certain syllables out of his words but you can definately make out what hes saying. She has been told to focus on his eye contacr at home as he doesnt focus much and they say his eyes resemble babies when they are constantly looking around. He also takes her hand to what he wants, i.e. a drink, so she has to try and make him focus his eyes before she gives him what he wants. Apparently it will make him put a link between eye contact and communication.

I think he had blood tests to rule out something called fragile x syndrome. He has also very recently started doing imaginative play which they said autistic children do not do, I dont know why, but he does it. Honestly he has really come on in the last few weeks which just shows what can be acheived xx

Thanks for your reply. Noah has minimal eye contact with people too and spends most of the time looking at things out the corner of his eye.
We are working on picture cards as Noah has no speech or communication with anyone (won't point to things or take me to what he wants etc) but hopefully he will find his own way to communicate with us soon. I'm so pleased your little nephew is doing really well, makes me feel more positive about the future :) xx

Portage are fab Sammie. They are a very good way of seeing how Noah is doing in a familiar environment.

    I've also sent a PM!

My little monsters are only just asleep aaargh! I've got to make lunches and tidy up and everything :(

Also not sure squeaky will be at nursery tomorrow as she is coming down with my cold and is grumpy as hell.

Thanks everyone. You are all so lovely :)

Delain - did you receive portage visits? I have received a letter saying they will be in contact soon so fingers crossed it won't take too long.

We start a special needs toddler group at a local sure start centre next Monday so I'm really looking forward to meeting some other mummies and their little ones. :)

Yes we did and they were fab. They are really good for showing you play techniques that might help him engage more with people around him.

Actually their worker was at Squeak's nursery last year visiting another child and we had a bit of a catch up which was nice.

    Hi ladies

Feeling bad I can't get in here much at the moment but hope everyone is ok.

Noah was diagnosed with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) on Friday and has already been out on a list for a special needs preschool in our area as the paediatrician and his speech and language therapist don not think he will be able to attend a mainstream preschool. :(

The dr said its a waiting game to see what the future holds for him.

Oh sweetheart. I was wondering how things were going. Reading back, it sounds like you're getting lots of help. We will try to support you too.

  • Sammie, sounds like you're getting the social support Noah needs, sometimes that's the hardest part, just getting into the system. Best of luck with makaton. My nephew uses it and really helps with his frustration when he wants something. (not autistic, he's 4yrs with Down's syndrome)
    Big hugs.x
  • Morning ladies, any tips on how to help a 6 month old with a cold/blocked nose etc?

Sammie hope your ok, glad your getting all the help you need :)
