Cake, could you get an appt for today? For me, it would depend on how they were - lethargic, breathing pattern, sleeping alot etc. I have rang nhs direct before and they have been good but know some people dont think tjey are. Hope she is ok xxxx

Been awake all night. Mollie had a temp of 102.5 :(

Took her downstairs and stripped her down to her nappy and put her under the ceiling fan. I gave her water with apple juice ice cubes and she drank quite a bit. I've never felt anyone so hot before. Was awful. She wasn't too bad in herself until she started getting tired again and then she just wouldn't stop crying. Gave her calpol too and her temp eventually came down to 99.5

She's just woken up and her temp is 103 . She's back under fan with ice water but no idea whats causing it. She's playing normally with her toys and smiling at me. Will give her some more calpol and if that doesn't help, will give her a lukewarm bath

Any other tips ladies? Would you go straight to docs?

With a temp that high, yes I would. Keep giving her paracetamol and keep her as cool as possible.

  • I'd be tempted to call nhs direct myself cake, it is a pretty high temp - is she fine in herself otherwise?

Thanks everyone. Yes she's alright otherwise. A bit grumpy but no doubt I would be if I had a temp. She's been sat giggling with Amelia and is now stuffing her face. Gave her a frozen yoghurt which she wolfed down and they're now smearing philly covered toast all over their faces.

I will see how she is in an hour or so. We don't have docs open on a Saturday, I'd have to take her to the out of hours doc at A&E. Which I will def do if she is still the same

Going to take her temp now. Thanks again ladies x

Cake, when my LO had a very high temperature a couple of months ago, we did go to A&E. The one thing they did was alternate Calpol and Nurofen so that she had medication every 2-3 hours rather than the usual longer gap that you'd need to leave between doses of Calpol alone. But I realise that what I'm doing now is bordering on giving medical advice, so I'll stop here and say that if the temperature goes up again, I'd definitely go to the doctors. In my LO's case, they found an ear infection, which is what had caused the high temperature, so we got antibiotics for that. Fingers crossed it keeps getting better though! :)

I'm dreading my lo ever being ill! I'm totally neurotic when it comes to him, me however I would only go to the drs if I felt so rough I thought I was knocking on heavens door!

However after having lo I worry about everything, I need to learn to chill out!

So cake, glad the temp has come down, keep an eye on her.

My lo has learnt to hold his toes when I'm changing his bum, makes it easier for me, slightly annoying when he trumps though :D

Sorry didn't say good morning... Morning all! :)

Katie, welcome back! Glad you had a good holiday.

MsrH, I think most parents worry about everything when it comes to their children - but at least it'll get a little easier once they're able to tell us what's wrong or what bit of their body hurts :o

After a series of bad nights, we finally had a really good one! She slept from 7.15pm to 5.15am with only one quick dummy demand at 3am :j After functioning on 3-4 hours a night for a couple of weeks, I feel really good today.

What's everyone got planned for the weekend? I think we'll be staying at home today - our flat stays fairly cool downstairs (upstairs where the bedrooms are is a different story...) so that's probably the best place to be in this heat. We'll be spending time in the garden of course, but not going anywhere else if I can help it :)

Hope everyone has a good day and that the little people don't suffer too badly in the heat x

An interesting link about the controlled crying. My little one wakes up often and can either settle herself or needs a dummy and a quick soothing. I realise she won't sleep solidly for 12 hours.

However, we have a terrible time when she wakes up too much and becomes "wide awake" in the night and wants to play. She is fine lying on our bed and loves to snooze back off with us, but that isn't really solving the problem. She is awful at napping without milk, a drive the car, a push in the pram or singing and is crabby all day because she fights sleep. Even when she has a nap in her cot, its 20 minutes twice a day if we are lucky. I feel like she is 75% crabby from lack of naps and the other 25% a happy baby.

I'm just in two minds as to what to do. Hubby suggested we try CC last night when she had her wide and awake and play phase. It was the longest most awful hour of my life. Then I go and read things like the article posted and other things which says CC can damage children neurologically and wonder what the alternatives are. I don't know if I can do it again. Though it worked but probably because she had just literally worn herself out. I feel awful. Though I did check she wasn't hungry, thirsty, in need of a nappy change or had a temperature before we did it. She was fine lying on our bed and as soon as we put her in the cot she wailed and wailed. Still, feel awful.

I know we definitely need to do something because spending 2-3 hours a day getting a baby to sleep for 20 minutes at a time is just not sustainable. Ho hum.

Get well Amelia - that was a high temp! Hope your drive home wasn't too hot Katiechoc - sounds like a hot one!

I'm not experienced at this at all monypenny, but have you tried to get LO to associate some thing else with sleep. A mobile tune playing as you're soothing her to sleep when she's tired, then when she wakes you can play that same mobile to help her associate it with sleep?
