The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Hi Tuppie
Had a bit of a look regarding ulcers and hopefully the following will give you a bit more encouragement with giving up!!
though it can be partly due to nicotine substitutes (I found a website from 2005 saying oral substitutes are more likely to give ulcers when you start to give up but they will go) it is also a natural reaction to giving up smoking as follows:
http://www.cks.library.nhs.uk/patient_information_leaflet/mouth_ulcer/causes
From the link above:Stopping smoking
When you first stop smoking, you may find that you have more mouth ulcers than usual. This is a normal reaction and is part of your body's way of dealing with the change in chemicals in your body.
After quitting smoking, any increase in mouth ulcers will be temporary, and you should not let it deter you from stopping smoking. The long-term health benefits of stopping smoking are far greater than the short-term discomfort of mouth ulcers.
Stopping smoking will mean you are at a lower risk of developing smoking-related conditions, such as heart disease and lung cancer. You will also have a greatly improved overall level of fitness.
See the 'related articles' section for further information about the benefits of quitting smoking.
On your other bits .. not really sure if i'm the best person to answer (if you look at my sig) but one thing i do know is cutting up cards is good!
just been to the pub again tonight (one of my worst places for smoking) and, surprisingly, didn't want one at all!! .. I know better than to lull myself into a false sense of security but really REALLY feeling good this time:D
(p.s. Hi ya Feedumall :hello: .. really really happy for you .. you gave up the same time as me originally and are proof that it can be done!! :j :T :j ):hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0 -
Hi folks
Just wanted to stop in too and say hi, I've been keeping up with the daily digest of the posts on here but haven't popped in for a while.
Still smoke free and its great to see Schmickle and Kate are as well, as we stopped around the same time. All these other new quitters too - great stuff! :j
Hi again debbie! Good to see you and very well done on keeping quit.:T I think it's wonderful that you, Schmickle and Kate can urge each other along, it really does help. Keep it up debbie, you have a great life ahead!
Well done TDQO, another successful day done! You too bigsmoke and well donr with all you wrote to tuppie! However, one more thing. If you've not had a ciggie for 6 days then that's what you've achieved so far SIX days as a non-smoker!!!! :T :j Another proud quitter back then American Dreamer and sounding just as determined to stick to it, wonderful news!!! :T You soon got to day 9!!
Hiya tuppie, it seems to me as though you've done the right thing, you also put your saved money to good use, but write the amount down somewhere to hand so it keeps you reminded of what you've NOT spent!I hope those ulcers soon clear up, we have no end of people having the same syptoms and they've soon got over them, you will too!
I had to grin at your words "Thank God for boiled sweets as i have a Jar from Aldi £2.49 and i take the Jar with me like a comfort blanket!" Whatever you find that works, stick to it until you're over the vulnerable stage, just do exercise each day to take the calories off. The exercise will also help a lot with releasing endorphins into your body and making you feel so much better.
Don't worry about that little 'blip' Chameleon, though whether your friend was a real friend at that moment.......? Have you got back on the wagon again since? Many of us have done the same, but got straight back into quitting again so as not to have wasted the time. IF you only have that one, then just view it as a one-off and go back to the day you started. I wish you well, go for it again Chameleon, you can do it!!!Good to see you helping there themammy! Still a non-smoker too!!! :T
Waspy - You're doing brilliantly with your quitting and you're doing some really special work here on the board and I know we'll all appreciate that so very much. It's one thing for me to do it, but I've got through it long since. It's totally different when folk like yourself motivate others so well as it motivates you too!!! Well done all round Waspy you're doing SO well!!! :T
It's so good to see you again Feedie, what a time you've gone smoke free for! As I always say (I know, I nag!), please keep coming back and keeping us all updated as we need your incentive too!mumofcookers wrote:Day 3 for me.
I feel that I can't think straight today, like a "hazey" feeling. I really hope it doesn't last too long.
And I really really need to stop eating!!
Hi mumofcookers, please don't concern yourself too much about the hazey feelings, it's such a natural feeling for so many of us to begin with, but as with cravings etc, you'll find it soon passes off. Try very hard to focus on wonderful memories of past pleasures (I'm sure something will come to mind!) whenever you feel that way. Put on some relaxing music and thumb through a treasured photo album or PC photos.
Go outside and go for a really brisk walk and stomp away all those negative thoughts and feelings. As I said above to tuppie "...The exercise will also help a lot with releasing endorphins into your body and making you feel so much better"
As for feeling that you constantly want something to eat (exercise will help there too!). "Feedumall" (our 8 month quitter above!!!!) had the same problem and always used ice poles to help her through, sour sweets too, give each a try and see if they can help you too! Don't forget that water, drink a glass when you feel peckish it'll soon fill you up.
Another day closer ALL and what a difference you're all finding in each new and fresh day! Pink lungs DO rule Waspy, well done for that!

Morning all
Well what a strange night that was:rolleyes:
Went to bed after here then was woken up twice by the (REALLY loud) fire alarm  .. false alarm as always.. someone deciding to cook in the early hours!!
Then the usual 3am wake up banging from my neighbours .. followed by a bizarre three hours searching for my car at a festival.. (yes I was asleep) .. did find it eventually, in the back stage parking, no idea how it got there but at least it was found
Absolutely shattered now and my leg hurts from all the walking!!
Is it home time yet? just want to get under my duvet!
Anyways hope everyone else is doing fine today?
*a bit of a confuddled Waspy:hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0 -
Don't worry about that little 'blip' Chameleon, though whether your friend was a real friend at that moment.......?
Is it not a good idea to use patches then?
I'm not sure I can manage to go completely cold turkey though
Has anyone else found their sleep is extremely disturbed? I've only been getting around 2-3 hours sleep last couple of nights and last night I had some of the most terrible and vivid nightmares to the extent I was actually crying and shouting in my sleep
I feel completely shattered today so hope this is just a passing phase“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Don;t talk to me about disturbed sleep!! :rotfl:
It is quite normal .. I get it a lot as i'm taking champix .. trying to counter it with nytol but doesn't always work
As in my post further up... there are a lot of chemical changes going on in your body and it's just your minds way of trying to deal with it!
Patches do work it just that you are still getting nicotine (albeit a smaller dose) so will eventually have to ween yourself off them.
P.S. As others have said, don't worry about the little blip, these things happen.. if i'd had one available this morning I may well have had one myself but that wouldn't have meant i'd "failed"... luckily none available!!

Hi everyone,
sorry to hear there are weird sleep events occurring, although i'm sorry to say your post made me laugh Waspezeglad you found the car though, I feel as though I missed out as I didnt take champix, I did however wake up at 3 every morning for weeks but that's all over now thankfully.
Keep going guys & Sue - apologies :A0 -
Don't worry Lula .. I had a little giggle myself (might have been a "mad" giggle though
)
I just felt sorry for the two officials I roped into helping me try and find it ...
If you're out there THANKS TO THE TWO PEOPLE AT WASPY FEST in the bright orange jackets .. it was appreciated:cool:

What's champix?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

It's a prescription drug you can get from the doctors.
Basically it blocks the nicotine receptors in your brain and at the same time affects how ciggies taste... it is REALLY good in some cases though not something to consider if there's any history of depression as it can affect the taker psychologically.
It's different from patches, gum etc as you're not getting any nicotine!
If you thought about trying it then mention it to your doctor and see what they say...
(i'll dig out a proper description for you in a moment!):hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0
