  • I would give up but...umm I don't want to? Is half the battle wanting to? If so....how exactly do I want to?
  • Rain I "didn't want to" really either, just got fed up of spending almost £10 a day on cigarettes (me and dh) then complaining about how expensive the boys school shoes/trips etc were!! Just decided I had to, but only you can chose, you want to carry on smoking - you can and you will!
    I stopped smoking 25th June 2007
    STILL Never complacent but confident
    My debt is GOING DOWN!!!!
  • There are 100's of 'reasons' why we shouldn't smoke (health, financial) but I had personal 'motivators' to encourage me to give up.

There are of course, (or so our nicotine stained minds are led to believe) 100's of 'reasons' why we should/can smoke
so it's a smoking/no smoking seesaw which has both sides competing. The side we choose to sit on comes down to the individual.

Rain, I don't think any smoker actually 'wants to' give up, it's just a case of getting fed up with financing it, the health risk, being tied to something. In my personal opinion, I think I didn't want to try and give up because I was frightened that I might not succeed, I was worrying about failure before I'd even attempted it.

Although I do agree that some people are just not ready and if you really feel that way then probably best to think about it some more, cos if you go into it negatively then you are already on a bad footing. Kinda like when people give up drinking but they don't really want to, they are dry drunks, dry but bluddy miserable!!

You will get there eventually, and when you do we will be here to help you through it :D

    Good luck Rain!

  • total agreement Jo (oops, here I am again ;))

I'm still not entirely convinced I wanted to give up. In fact, I'm pretty sure I didn't want to give up. I just thought it was something I should think about.

Apart from that, reading ACs book (which I'd had sitting on my bookshelf for months) changed my life (i'm not saying it will change yours, just it had that effect on me).

All I'd say is read one of the 2 books (for me it was Allen Carr, for others it's Neal Casey). Then make your mind up whether or not you want to quit.

By the way, have any of us spoken to current smokers about the above books?

I've spoken to loads of current-smokers who said they own and have read the Allen Carr book - until you actually grill them and they admit they read a bit of the Allen Carr book and never bothered getting to the end.......
Never found anyone who has read the book to the death and still smokes (although one of my friends admitted they bought the audio book because they couldn't be bothered to read it - they still quit anyway)

The Allen Carr book I know quite a few people who start, but then put it down a few chapters in - I think the points he makes are very good and valid, but I know I got annoyed sometimes with his writing style!

It got me back onto the straight & narrow on Monday when I was having a v.v.bad day - was nearly at the point of running to the local shop for fags, but made myself read a couple of chapters & then I could resist!

The questions he suggests posing to people wondering if they want to give up though are good...

Knowing what you know now, how much money you've spent and how addicted you are, would you still have had that first cigarette?

Do you encourage your children to smoke?

Rain - if you can honestly answer 'yes' to these questions, then you have absolutely no desire to quit - but if you answers 'no' then you're getting there.

I do believe though that quitting smoking, along with any other addiction, you personally have to be at the right point to do it - not waiting for a 'good' time etc but at a point where you are ready to take control of your life.

    Good luck!

  • Whats going on Jo and I haven't gone away yet and this was on page 5 - someone is not paying attention! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Things good with me, its funny how you grow used to not smoking isn't it .... but I'm acutely aware of how much easier it would be to start and love it again!!!!! Although now dh has admitted his closet habit he is smoking a little more me thinks, but not in front of me and not in the house, but omg he smells and when I kiss him just after .... eugh. I used to smell like that to my children how cruel is that!!!! He says he's stopping through the holiday so fingers crossed!

Can't remember if I've mentioned this but a couple of weeks after we stopped my dd (aged 5) developed a really bad cough .... I'm convinced this was her "smokers cough" and her body expelling all the smoking crap we had fed her from conception. Its gone now so I'm even more convinced that what it was.

I'll leave you with that thought ..... happy smokefree day people!!
    love and hugs

  • Anyone else still having dreams about Smoking?

I keep dreaming about going on holiday and having a cigarette. As soon as I put it in my mouth I feel terrible and then am violently sick.

I guess it's not nice, but hey, it makes me not want to smoke.

    Have a nice day too

I've definately been having more vivid dreams since I've given up smoking. At first I put that down to the patches but I've not worn a patch for over a week now and I'm still getting them. They all seem to include my dad who passed away over 13 years ago now. And they all include some kind of travel either trains, boats or aircraft, oh and fairground rides

I've found this week that I actually need a lot less sleep - been going to bed later than normal, and waking up easier in the mornings too! Very odd, not that I'm complaining :D
