  • I only pop into this thread now and again, but I agree with everyone else in that TNG must not leave us. This site is all about advice and encouragement, and you have that in abundance.

Hope everyone else is going well with quitting. According to my silkquit meter, in 13 days' time I will have not smoked 20,000 fags since I put out my last one.

When I quit last year I wasn't allowed to join as I was trying to go cold turkey and apparently you have to have tried patches etc first. So basically unless I've spent money I haven't got on something that's not right for me (the nicotine in those things is far higher than the amount of cigs I ever smoked!)
However I'm thinking of telling a fib when I go back to the doctor so that they let me join :shhh: Is that really bad?! I just reckon the fact you have to get your carbon thingy level measured might do the trick. What do other people think of the classes? Any help gratefully received! I managed a month last time on total willpower alone but I now recognise I might need help particularly when bad things happen

they wouldnt let you join because you wanted to go cold turkey rather than buy the patches etc? my group gives everyone the patches or whatever for free for 2or 3 months. i dont find it all that useful though. but i could just be unlucky and have got an unfriendly bunch of people in my group. and i don't want to be repeatedly told how hard it is and most people slip up etc etc.

day 4 today and i have spent all day today and yesterday wanting a cig. so much for cravings only lasting 4 mins lol i wish i knew someone who smoked so i could have just a couple of drags of one, i know at this point it will be disgusting and i wont want anymore than that but if i buy a pack ill have to smoke them and then i will be back at square one with the nicotine cravings again.

Hi basilcat! wow - nearly ONE MONTH!! Brilliant achievement. Remember my constant mantra ... think positive. You know from the fact that you've survived the last month that you don't NEED a fag. The definition of NEEDING something is surely that you can't live without it, and you know you can. ;):D

What you are missing - or have a pang for - is that "satisfied" feeling you got when you smoked. If we felt a bit edgy, worried or stressed we would light that little stick and amazingly feel better almost straight away! But now you know why, you know how to avoid falling in that trap again. You know that you felt good then because you were addicted to a drug and having a hit of that drug made you feel better. That's ALL it was. A cycle of addiction that was a constant rolling nightmare of smoke, satisfy craving, go into withdrawal, smoke, satisfy craving, go into withdrawal, smoke....

purplecatlover - that goes for you too! If you wanted to guarantee the most miserable existence possible then you would have a mate who would let you have a couple of drags of their ciggie every other day. That would be enough to keep you in constant withdrawal permanently. My personal idea of hell and I would honestly rather be a full time smoker than go through that. But if you did have a mate like that then you wouldn't end up having a drag every couple of days because once you had a drag you would awaken your addiction and I would bet you £1k right here and now you'd then go back on the fags full time.

We are all here 'cos we FINALLY broke that horrible cycle. Whether we've had wobbly times or not I don't think anyone would argue that we ALL know life without our drug addiction to ciggies is so much better. I honestly can't think of anything that would persuade me to go back!!!

Talking of which... BIGEARS!! Can't tell you how great it is to see you back!! How are things?? Hope you are okay and you're managing to get things sorted with the house. I can't imagine how mad the last month must have been. Hope to see you on here lots more!

    Hello to everyone else
    QUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j
  • Hi JoeHel! It feels SO GOOD to be back! We moved into a new place last week after weeks living with the in-laws. They are all very lovely but tbh I was smoking more so I could have 5 minutes to myself, outside in the garden
Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year? I was so disappointed with myself when we rang in 08 and I realised I was still smoking. So today I've not even gone out to get the paper, stayed in and busied myself round the house and I'm not tempted at all to go out into the horrible night and buy cigs.
I bet tomorrow is another story! But I'll keep logging back on here and fight through it. I did miss you all when I said I was going for a bit - didn't get the opportunity to catch up until we got the internet at home this weekend. When you're not using this site every day, it's mad how quickly you forget or excuse just popping out for a fag/spending money on a latte when the office has a perfectly good kettle and things like that.
So what I was trying to say in a very long winded manner is  Cheers! It's great to be back!

  • Hi all,

Wanted to join this thread as both me and my wife stopped the fags on New Years Day and have been off them ever since.

I wanted to say how we have already noticed a MASSIVE difference moneywise - I get paid (full time, pretty ok, wage) on the 15th of every month and normally by the time my OH gets paid (part time wage) at the end of the month, our money is gone.

Suddenly, it isn't. It's such a motivational factor. Previously we would have been in denial about how much we spent on cigs (like all smokers?) but already we are seeing a massive, massive difference. We have things which need doing around the house and that also is helping - we can now plan to get the bathroom painted, get the fence fixed in the back garden, etc etc.

It's so good to be free of the coffin nails and seeing our money being ours again.

Good luck to all in the same situation. Keep at it!!
