The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Mumzy you never give up trying even when things don't go to plan and that makes you worth every bit of support we can give you!! Hopefully the book should arrive tomorrow to give you something to get stuck into!! It's in a white jiffy bag but should be small enough to get through the letterbox if you are out
I don't know if you've got an MP3 player, but I downloaded the CD onto my laptop then put it on my MP3 so I could listen to it at bedtime with my headphones. It will send you to sleep and help work on your sub-conscious which over time breaks down those smoking triggers.
There's one other thing I wanted to say to you that I thought of on my way home. Our brains are hugely complex but they're actually very easy to fool sometimes. Did you know that if you say something, even if you don't really mean it or believe it, your sub conscious brain thinks you are telling the truth....
I studied psychology and read of a study to find out if you could heal wounds quicker with positive thinking. They got people to focus and meditate on their post-op scars and think "positive healing" thoughts. The people who did this healed up to twice as fast, even if they didn't believe it would work!!!
The trick is - you must say POSITIVE things. For instance, don't say "I hate smoking" because "hate" is a negative word. Instead, say "I love being free of nicotine" because that's a totally positive message.
My point is this. Let's say you're in your first morning of quitting and you have that usual early-morning pang. The one that you feel the worst. Just do one thing for me tomorrow when you wake up and feel that urge to smoke. Instead of lighting up go into the bathroom and look in the mirror. Take a really deep breath in and exhale slowly. Say to yourself "I am STRONG and I CAN DO THIS!! Nicotine free life will be fantastic!" and then smile. then one more deep breath.
Seriously - I did that for the whole 3 days while the nicotine was getting out of my system - every time I had an urge to smoke. Obviously when I was at work I said it in my head, so as not to look a complete loonWhether you believe it will work or not doesn't actually matter - what matters is that your sub conscious brain believes every word you are saying and it'll make you feel so much stronger and more in control. It makes you giggle quite a lot too... heh heh

Hi
Well here I am at work and still not smoked. Had a few pangs but nothing major really. Thought I would struggle tonight as I normally have a fag before I go into where I work but so far so good. I think I know I will do it this time as I kept thinking about a quit date and I kept prolonging it and finding excuses to delay it. Sat at work last night and did some research and decided " Sod it " If I am going to do it i may as well do it now as i will keep putting reasons in my way why i cannot stop. So got up today and decided thats it No more smoking. Did help that i had a sore throat and a bad cough. Mind you I have been really short of breath lately and that was also a major reason in my giving up.
mumzyof2. Good luck and will be thinking of you. I am here until the early morning ( Work permitting ) so if you fancy a chat I will pop in at regular intervals.
TOBRUK. Good luck for you as well for Saturday.
Thanks for the warm welcome from you all and will pop in later.

Not feeling to bad at all really. Only downside is that I am at work

Fantastic ym. Just keep going! Before you know it you'll be through the 72 hour barrier and things will just get soooo much easier!! You'll wonder what you ever worried about
In the first week I quit, I had to do a night shift. That was after I'd worked a full day... and I ended up having to work right through the night too!! I was so tired and I thought it would be awful without my ciggie breaks, but the evening actually went loads faster because I wasn't punctuating the whole evening with fags or worrying about how long I'd have to wait 'til the next one.... That is just the best thing - having all that panic and worry GONE!!
I'll check in in the morning to see how you got on tonight
off to bed now. Catch you tomorrow mumzy. email if you need to chick.
Night all. xQUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j0 -

Hi
Had to do a bit of work there, that wont do :rotfl:
Without giving to much away I work in the travel industry. Its not that I dont want people to know where i work but i would not like someone from work reading my sig and knowing about my debt problems.
Yes I do have the internet at home but generally nights are quite slow and as a Supervisor once my paperwork is done and wrapped up for the preceding day I can browse away. Dont get anything done at home if i sit on Mse :rotfl:
