The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Heh, you have just reminded me of when I first started reading the Allen Carr book. At the start Allen tries to help you realise that if he can quit, ANYONE can quit. He was a 100 a day smoker who had resorted to smoking in his car so his wife couldn't shout at him, and who was having nosebleeds whenever he lit up. His smoker's logic told him that if he's just had a nosebleed, the blood would have sunk lower than his nose-level in his body so he'd be safe to light up another straight afterwards....
I remember reading that and thinking "wow, you must have been SERIOUSLY addicted to still smoke with blood pouring out of your nose ... but actually I don't think you were as addicted as I am because you have quit and you're happy and I know I will NEVER be truly happy once my fags have gone..."
Because I still believed, at that time, that cigarettes helped me get through my daily stresses, I didn't know how I would live without them and I was as nervous as you now are at the though of letting them go...
My description of how revolting a smoker I was is just to try and show you how much I sympathise with how you are feeling right now and how scary I know it is.
I wish it were possible to produce a tablet that people could take that would show them what it feels like to be nicotine free, just for an hour. I promise you - if you had that pill and took it - you would not believe that all it takes is 3 days without nicotine to feel that good.
The only thing I'm sad about is that I left it all these years to pluck up the courage to try.
I hate to think of how much of my credit card debt is ciggies I'm still paying for!!!!QUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j0 -
Hello everyone.
Just got up and day 2 commences. Feeling Ok and would like to thank you all for your support.
Feeling positive is such a good tip. Really going to do it this time and that makes me feel good. I am not moping about fags but am glad to be rid of the little bleeders. Some of my favorite memories are when I was a child going on holiday and living a carefree life. Long lazy days filled with adventure. I did not smoke then so why do I need to now., I dont and I am going to recapture those days and live life to the full and enjoy every day. All I have to do is not smoke. Easy  . It has been so far and TOBRUK do not dread tomorrow look forward to it. Honestly it is quite fun. If I can do it anyone can. 20 a day for 27 years. lot of time to make up. I have tried several times so those of you do not despair if you have tried and not made it yet (Cant fathom out why it seems easier this time I think it may be that I can go through it with you guys.) It will come and never give up ,giving up.
TNG Got book today many thanks. When I have done with it I will pass it on and it can be the threads official copy.
Well of to heat up dinner and will catch up with you all later. Got 50 ballons to blow up tonight as we are putting up xmas decs at work. Good job I dont smoke eh :rotfl:

JoeHel, I do actually remember how I felt in August on my first attempt to stop (although using patches) and the first couple of weeks I was fine and it felt good! I was away at the time (home with family) ... it was just coming back here to an empty house and just everything went to pot and went back to 'normal'!!!
Hi yellowmonkey, well done youthanks so much for your support, and ofcourse everyone else ... it means a lot.;)

yellowmoney - am so pleased for you and what a brilliant post.
I know what you mean Tobruk. Last time I tried quitting was with patches but I was rubbish with them and I didn't ever actually get off nicotine because I used the patches then started peeling them off in the evenings so I could chain smoke all evening!!!!I've tried to keep everything around me as "normal" as possible this time - ie don't make OH go out of the room and smoke, don't take any time off work - just do all my usual chores and routine so I get used to doing all the same stuff just without the cigs.
I honestly have no idea why things are so different this time. Something I've read on WhyQuit.com has clicked and that's done it. I have lost all need and desire. It was like discovering there's no santa and I know it's impossible for me to go back now.QUIT SMOKING 4/11/07 :j0 -

Oh no! Now you've upset me and made me cry! ha ha!:rotfl:You two are so funny ... you are a tonic:D
Well, I have just finished writing my Christmas cards, plus there were 10 letters I needed to write to put in some of them! I needed to get it out of the way before tomorrow ... one thing with M.E. is that I get a lot of 'brain fog' and there are times I can't think straight or put sentences together! The fact now I have done the dreaded C CARDS gives me one less thing ... one less excuse to light up tomorrow or the next day!:T0 -
