I haven't been on this thread for a while basically because I was too ashamed and I also didn't want to undermine anyone elses efforts to stop smoking but I really need help. I have been a smoker for over 30 years and was smoking 35 a day. A guy in work (the only other smoker) stopped last new year and spent a lot of time telling me how he had come to the decision and how he would never smoke again. I took the bull by the horns and went to the doctor and got put on Champix. Now I didn't expext it to work as I have tried every aid to quit smoking with the result it was costing me nearly as much trying to stop as it was smoking. The fact is that it did work and while on the Champix it was relatively easy not to smoke. I'm not saying I didn't get the odd craving but it was easier to get over than with anything else. I was completely smoke free for 6 weeks and then a couple of things happened which sort of put a spanner in the works. The guy in work started smoking again. He had been my inspiration to stop and I was sooooo disappointed. Secondly I went onto a website and read up about Champix and it sent that on completion of the course some people felt the urge to smoke again. I thought OMG that'll be me as I was such an addict before and I really loved smoking, I mean I didn't like smelling like an ashtray, I didn't like the fact that it was killing me (I am 51 and the test on my lungs showed them as having an age of 81 how scary is that!!!) I didn't like the cost etc. etc but I just really enjoyed a cigarette. Well I became totally terrified of coming off the Champix. I started breaking the tablets in half and trying to make them last longer, I "borrowed" packets off other people anything to put off the day when I had no tablets left. I now had it in my mind that as soon as I stopped the tablets I would start smoking again. And guess what??? I did. Only the odd one at first but I'm now up to 5 a day. Now when I was smoking 35 a day I would have been delighted with 5 a day but I know that every day or every week it's going to increase. I don't smoke at home or in work. Nobody actually knows that I'm back on them which means that I don't actually even get to sit down with a cup of coffee and enjoy the ones I'm smoking. I have to go somewhere where no one can see me then dash back clean my teeth etc. There is no joy in this but still I'm doing it. How sad am I? I am going away in a few weeks with my husband. the opportunity will not be there to smoke and I know he would be sooo disappointed in me anyway.
I can't can't go back to the doctor because the tablets are expensive and I had to fight to get them in the first place. I don't want to be doing this but here I am almost back to square one. I too wish I could press the back button. I think I'm going to have to try going cold turkey. I wish/I hope I have the strength. Let any one who thinks they are in control of their smoking read this. you don't control cigarettes, they control you.

Adz, if you re-read those posts I think you'll find that people are trying to help not criticise - it's a giving-up thread so naturally people assume if you're on here, you want help and sometime help=a gentle kick up the !!!.
I think people have taken a real interest in you and tried to help you - don't get cross because we aren't pleased that you are still smoking!
I can't think of anywhere else where a bunch of strangers would help people through a terrifying, really hard process - for free! - so make the most of it (I am!) I hope you feel differently soon - I still have my fingers crossed for you.
:T Francophile - hugs - and all credit to you for continuing to try and get help. Don't know what to suggest as I'm only just getting the hang of it myself but judging from what I've read so far there will be a load of helpful suggestions due any time soon!
I also have a no-smoking buddy at work who led me astray the other night  We'll get sorted eventually though
Mumzyof2 - Good luck! You are definitely in the right place to get help.
I'm off home for the weekend soon so will wish everyone a lovely, fag free and money-saving weekend
