Not a good day to be single

It's always amusing when partnered-up friends preach at me condescendingly about how great it is being single. I simply say "why don't you try it then/shall I tell partner how you feel".
Soon shuts 'em up
Sure I love my family and are very grateful for them, but it's nowhere near the same as having a partner.0 -
I'm enjoying it much more this year (single) than I was in a rubbish relationship last year!
Last year I had been single for the previous 6 Valentine's Days so was looking forward to any recognition of the day at all.... In the end, late at night, now ex boyfriend wrote a card right in front of me, sealed the envelope and passed it to me!
Seeing all the stuff in the shops doesn't bother me. I am wondering if my older son will come back from school with a card. He has been asked out more times in his first term and a half at high school than I have in my whole life!0 -

I think people can be incredibly insensitive towards those who are single but would rather not be, actually.
I have a close friend who has always wanted to be settled with children, more than anything, but it just hasn't happened for her yet. Now she's nearing 30 the comments are almost constant. The poor girl is accused of being picky, accused of being a 'career woman', accused of leaving it too late and asked about her biological clock.
What are they expecting? That she can magically produce a suitable partner out of thin air? That she should settle for any old idiot off the street for a ring and a fertilised egg?0 -
Thanks guys. Some great messages on here that made me smile!
I started a similar thread early because I was feeling 'lonely'.
having been officially single for a couple of years, I've come to terms with it but as time goes on I feel it most on special days like today, Xmas etc. The rest of time I'm glad I'm single. What with all my activities: single working mum, volunteer, archer, degree student.
I might be feeling it today but I'll be fine tomorrow as will the rest of you. It's nice to know we're not alone! Here's to hoping we're all with someone by next valentines day!"The best things in life are free"

I have never been that into Valentines Day but still, it isn't a great day to be single.
I disagree. I think it is a fab day to be single.
No having to feel guilty about not wanting to pay several times over the top for chocolates, flowers, a card and a meal where service will be slow because it is so busy.
Also no being disappointed because your current OH decides they can cope with the guilt and doesn't bother to spoil you
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -

I must say i totally agree with this, i'm coming up to my 30's and all i seem to hear is how i should be settled down with a family etc - it's almost like the tables have turned, when my parents were my age they were just dating then they got married, moved out and had kids.
These days it seems you have kids first - i sometimes feel like i was born in the wrong era!
i also get asked if i am a lesbian alot lol like i have to have an excuse for being single! how about i just enjoy the life i have and at present haven't met anyone that could enjoy it with me.. is that really a strange concept?

Well ive today just told the guy im seeing its not working out for me. Been sitting here a few weeks wondering if hes the right guy. Wont go into why its not working, but its got to me today of all days, more than anyother day has. I want it to work, but cant see it ever will. Hes let me down this weekend again. Not known him long, but if the last month or so has anything to go by, the way his life is wont changed. His previous girlfriends ended it for the same reason. Maybe thinking time for him, i think.

I can identify with your friend so much. I'm in exactly the same position, and get comments (from my customers mainly) about how i'm quote "left on the shelf".0
