Hi PL, thanks for the offer of help, it's much appreciated by all I'm sure!
My question:
I go mountain biking regularly (2 - 3 times a week, sometimes more), but I've heard through the grapevine that cycling can lead to tightened and shortened leg muscles. What's the best way to combat this? Stretching before/after rides or another form of exercise alongside cycling perhaps?...
Also, what's your opinion on taking cod liver oil and/or glucosamine sulphate capsules to prevent joint wear and tear?
Thanks in advance x0 -
Hiya, this thread is great! I've learned lots from it! You're very kind to offer to help people like this.
Just wondered if you could advise me. I'm trying to lose weight, get fit, would love to join the RAF once I've managed this. Yup. I know it's hard work but I know I can do it. Just want to get there sensibly.
I'm 22, size 16 (weight about 12 and half stone), at the moment I'm walking for about 45 mins a day - uphill and downhill. I've got a lateral thigh toner with the arm cords and go on this about 4 times a week for 35-30 mins. I have been running twice - I downloaded this amazing podcast - it's called couch to 5K in nine weeks - it starts you off running for a minute and walking for 90 secs and eventually over the 9 weeks builds you up to running for 5K (3miles). What else can I do? I've cut the booze out. Should I go on weightwatchers as well?
thanks,

Hi there,
thanks for starting this thread! Now, heres one for you... I want to put weight on!! I have a low BMI and suppose I'm clinically underweight. I feel scrawny. I used to be 8st and a half stone (and content with my weight) unil I went through a stressful period in my life. My weight dropped to just under 8 and I've been here for 5 years now!!
I like my food.. mainly healthy stuff, a few biccy and cakes, and I eat plenty. I don't exercise as I'm worried that I'll lose more weight! I can't do gyms as I find them boring and expensive and I can't run as I develop some 'mystery' groin pain (been to surgeon/physio - nothing found) when I jog.
Can you recommend any exercise I can do at home to put a bit of weight/muscle on my legs without losing fat!?
thanks!!

Hi there!
I'd up the walking to power walking (i.e. faster!) on your walking machine and do it for 30 mins, 5 times a week. Also how about doing a few push ups for toning your upper body? Start with 10 if you can and work up to 20 - do these 5 times a week as well.
Add in some sit-ups as well (work up to 2 x 20 a day) you can do these every day if you like up until your holiday for maximum results.
Well done on your excellent weight loss so far!hi ....im going on holiday on 28th june...ive just lost 1 stone and want to work my !!!! off over the next month to see how much i can do....before my hols...usually after 2 weeks i start to notice changes so hopefully by 4 weeks should hit my target...of size 12 ( im a 14 now )

Do you know how to do lunges and squats? You could do some of those most days of the week (say, 2 sets of 20) and see if that helps a little but it probably wont cause you put put on any weight, a pound or two will be the most you can expect.
How often do you eat? 3 decent meals a day plus healthy snacks such as fruit, nuts, the odd treat etc will ensure you are healthy. Make sure you include plenty of good quality fats in your diet such as olive oil and nuts/seeds to help add a few pounds.
I can imagine how frustrating it must be, I bet you get people telling you how luckly you are all the time right! Anyway, best of luckbutterfly72 wrote: »Hi there,

Hello! It sounds as if you have your exercise pretty much under control, what is your diet like? You will be saving lots of calories by cutting out booze (assuming you used to drink much that is!) - do you still eat sugary snacks? A structured diet like weight watchers would really compliment your weight loss - you can join up online and weigh yourself at home to save thier meeting fees if you prefer. They offer two types of diets which you can try. I would give them a go.
Let me know how you get onHiya, this thread is great! I've learned lots from it! You're very kind to offer to help people like this.

Hi
You're right, cycling can shorten leg muscles (the calfs specifically) so I would stretch AFTER each ride (no need to stretch before) - hold your calf stretch for a good 20-30 secs on each side. Also, ensure you stretch your quads and hamstrings after each ride as well to maintain your flexibility.
There is some research to suggest that taking cod liver/glucosamine supplements can help to ease wear and tear on joints and I see no harm in taking them.
Hope this helpsHi PL, thanks for the offer of help, it's much appreciated by all I'm sure!
