Hello PL - any ideas on what exercise, or exercises, I could indulge in? I'm the weight I shoud be and have age related arthritis in both hips and C5 and C6 vertebrae. Something that would keep me as supple as poss for as long as poss would be good.

Hello Errata, given your arthritis I would suggest swimming as the best all round exercise as it is very easy on your joints and works all the main muscle groups, as well as your heart and lungs. If you are unable to swim then walking or cycling would be your next best bet. Good luck with it :)

Many thanks - hate water (long story!), I live in a hilly area and wouldn't cope with the steep bits on a bike, so it looks like walking for me. Anyone have any ideas on how to make walking less bl00dy boring !!!
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

    Hi PU,

I was playing squash for the first time 2 weeks ago, and twisted my ankle really badly. im currently wearing an ankle support and it's been fine, but it can be a little painful when i try to rotate my ankle. I usually attend aerobics classes at my gym. How long do u recommend i rest my ankle?

I am not a doctor so would not like to say for sure, it's probably best to visit your GP and take his advice. I hope it's better soon! Certainly don't exercise on it until it is pain free.

Just looking for some advice to 'broaden my horizons'. I am about 6 st overweight and am currently use the gym twice per week at my GPs- do 3x15 reps on the resistance machines, same on the dumbels (3kg weights) and then 30 min on the bike. Also do some boxing with the trainer there. Have been doing this for about 8 weeks and enjoy it.
I have now added in swimming twice per week (lengths) aiming to keep my HR at between 120-130 bpm. I suffered a # 5th metatarsal prior to Christmas, and have only recently got to the stage of some kind or normality with it.

I am wanting to do something else as well now as I need to get this weight off and have been out on a LF diet. Whats the best exercise to take up now to add in, bearing in mind that I am lugging a lot of weight around? What's the optimum times per week that I should be aiming for?

    TIA Inkie

I have to say that everything you are doing sounds perfect, however if you are looking for a change how about some gentle cycling (keeping your heart rate down)? Have you considered taking a yoga or Pilates class at all to add a bit of variety?

get a cheap cd or mp3 player.
you don't have t listen to music, you could listen to audio books too.

i have some audio language programmes (from my local library) that i listen to while i walk, so i'm exercising my brain and my body at the same time :D

in the past year i've managed to learn basic italian, russian and dutch as well as keep my weight stable for the first time in years. yay!
