I have tried to get a new boiler under ECO, as we meet the Government criteria in full. However the "Big 6" are obviously under the impression they can blatantly disregard the Government-stipulated criteria here by adding their own additional criteria which fully negates their obligation under the ECO scheme. We have been turned down by all Big 6, even though we meet the Gov't criteria.... how can this be allowed to happen ?

What needs be make clearer in all the blogs, webpages etc is the people who can claim and what rules. After contacting three companies all told me that even though all my double glazed windows needed replacing that the green deal only covers single paned windows and I could not claim anything. I also need a new boiler and do not expect any cash back as I work full time. Surely the green deal should be for everyone who needs it?

The Green Deal is for every one who needs it, it provides finance for 'cost effective improvements' double glazing is not likely to be a cost effective improvement because the payback period is just so long especially if you already have double glazing.

The best thing to do would be to get a Green Deal Assessment, you can pay for this or i think some companies are offering this for free but i would suggest you pay for it because it is likely to be more impartial because if you get a free one the assessor (although technically impartial) is going to be under a lot of pressure to get you to sign you up for something.

A list of assessor companies can be found here some of these companies have a form you can fill out on the website which gives you an idea of what the assessor would recommenced so its probably worth having a play around with one of these.

Everyone who gets an installation through a Green Deal Plan is eligible for the cashback.

The biggest barrier for eligibility for a green deal plan is the cost effective bit because if you have an ancient boiler but are a low user even fitting a new a rated boiler isn't going to be that cost effective.

  • I can't believe Green Deal has been available for so long. I didn't_'t know about it until this week. I have had an assessor out this week and have signed up for a survey with a view to having a new boiler. Mine is 13yrs old so this seems like an excellent way for me to get a new boiler. Why isn't there more publicity about it ? And why do so many people seem to be against it ?
  • MSE says that ANYONE can apply for solid wall insulation grant via Energy Company Obligation. I tried to apply via ECO for solid wall insulation but was told that it was only available to low-income households on benefits. Was wondering where to get the full details. Many thanks.

I'm really confused about the green deal and wondered if somebody can enlighten me please ? If I get an assessor out to do survey and it needs things doing eg new windows can I then just get windows done through any company (without green deal loan ) and then submit a claim for cashback or do windows have to be replaced by certain company recommended by green deal ?
  • My advice don't bother it's just a big con to line the pockets of companies doing the assessment. I had british gas come out to do my assessment with a view to trying to find a replacement boiler. The chap came out didn't really do much couldn't be bothered to work out my consumption properly because it was split over two suppliers, so guesstimate my usage which I signed off on, Said he would send it through, 6 weeks later nothing chased british gas, to be told it was online. Checked report to find my 20% increase in boiler efficiency would only equate to an 8.4% funding. After 6 more weeks of discussing with british gas I asked them to explain how a 20% efficiency gain ends up at 8.4%. They could not answer me, the only response I got was that's what the computer says. After pressing further they said they would come back to me, as yet waiting for an answer. However the one positive they refunded me my assessment money as they had not been able to answer my question and admitted their poor service. Will leave it their, just beware

Yes any one can claim, it is the Carbon Emissions Reduction Obligation (CERO) part of ECO this applies to all solid walled homes regardless of income and location all solid walled homes qualify. There is more information here.

In the latest consultation published 5th March the government aren't happy with the energy companies progress with this part of ECO and have released new guidelines to help meet the targets they have set which come in force from 1 April so maybe worth having another go then.

If you click here you can search for an installer which offers external/internal wall insulation in your area by entering your postcode.

However this part of ECO was never really designed to be fully funded, it is designed to subsidize the cost and then bridge the gap with your own cash or the Green Deal, but depending on the circumstances it can be fully funded.

To get the cash back you do not have to have a Green Deal Loan but you have to use a Green Deal Provider who will oversee the installation and ensure it has been done to Green Deal Standards by using a Green Deal Installer. A provider can be seen here

And then the Green Deal Provider can submit a claim for the cash back once the installation has been completed, details of the cash back can be seen here

For the windows to get the cashback it looks like it has to be replacing single glazed windows with a rated double glazing

  • Help, I'm having a problem with sorting green deal stuff. I live in a 1903 huge victorian style town house in llandudno, north wales. I am in a conservation area and i am not allowed double glazing. I think i might do it anyway... but it will have to be the hard wood sash variety rather than UPVC so that it doesn't notice! I definatley wouldn't get away with UPVC. If I was toeing the conservation area line it would have to be single glazing with draught excluders. What I am struggling with is finding an approved fitter / green deal assessor that will do this. If anyone knows of a company that would want to take this on I'd love to hear from you as my internet searching is coming up with london only firms. I'm desperate to get my house more energy efficient, and would love to take advantage of the green deal. Many Thanks Sheryl
