thanks, thought so, but because any alternative flight will be non direct flight now, while the original was direct flight, which means arrival time will be later than planned, so I will not be able to get to my next destination on time, if they have flights operating to my next destination, shall I request anyway.

The fact that you have a non linked subsequent flight is not their problem. In fact booking a further flight on the same day as your arrival was a very risky move!

What was the date and times of your original booking, and where were you flying from?

Ive spoken to 3 different people and have stated that legally, we are entitled to be re routed. They are saying that their company cant get ys there all the way abd so for part if the journey, we would have to use for eg KLM..and so this needs to be authorised. Originally I was told this would take max 5 hours, now Im being told Monday. They dont seem to appreciate that we need an answer as apparently, theres no urgency as my flight isnt tomorrow (!)

They do have a valid point there!

let us know the results if possible. I think they will offer you flight via Amsterdam instead of the original direct flight, will they offer anything extra for that? like reasonable compensation for the time wasted or a quick meal or something?
  • They have told me on facebook to wait until Monday, yet another chap has already had his flights changed. No consistency.

It seems like the message in various places is to wait until Monday if you want a reroute. No point calling at the weekend if most of the staff on duty are unable to authorise the reroute, and I guess it just serves to frustrate both us and them. Bit crap that the staff are not empowered to assist us promptly though.

As I see it for a flight in April which is when this was the OP is not covered by the regulation so is not entitled to compensation or re-routing.

The only entitlement to re-routing is is the flight is cancelled less that 2 weeks prior to departure

You're reading the regulations incorrectly. The 2 week cut-off has no bearing on the right to re-routing, it only affects the right to cash compensation.

Read Lewroll's case, well done to him! But he was in the middle of the trip, this alitalia flights cancellation is before hand, and also more than 14 days of notice, does this make any difference?

Sorry wxuk but you are mistaken, I was not in the middle of my trip, I was due to fly out with one airline and return with Jet2 who then made a decision to cancel all flights to my destination (some weeks prior to my departure), effectively leaving me stranded in Sharm because I could not cancel my outward leg and get a refund and of course flights from Sharm to the UK had soared in cost by this time. They did cancel with more than 14 days notice so I was not entitled to compensation (which I did not claim) but I was entitled to a re-route paid for by them which is what I asked them to do. The rest is history.:)

Strikes me that the risk of wanting a re-route is availability. Depending on the size of the original aircraft being used Alitalia could be looking to re-route 300+ people.
What if they come back and say they can't get space on an alternate flight?

Ok in this case with the long lead time it is unlikely, but it is always a possibility in these situations!

The right to re-routing is obviously conditional on seat availability. This is explicit in EU261.
  • Time to get back on the phone, hopefully I can get it sorted today.
