Read Lewroll's case, well done to him! But he was in the middle of the trip, this alitalia flights cancellation is before hand, and also more than 14 days of notice, does this make any difference?

No, a reroute would need to be to/ from the same places. They may allow you to change as a goodwill gesture, but you have no legal right to it.

thanks, thought so, but because any alternative flight will be non direct flight now, while the original was direct flight, which means arrival time will be later than planned, so I will not be able to get to my next destination on time, if they have flights operating to my next destination, shall I request anyway.

From the regulation linked to above
    Cancellation
    1. In case of cancellation of a flight, the passengers concerned shall:
    (a) be offered assistance by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 8; and
    (b) be offered assistance by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 9(1)(a) and 9(2), as well as, in event of re-routing when the reasonably expected time of departure of the new flight is at least the day after the departure as it was planned for the cancelled flight, the assistance specified in Article 9(1)(b) and 9(1)(c); and
    (c) have the right to compensation by the operating air carrier in accordance with Article 7, unless:
    (i) they are informed of the cancellation at least two weeks before the scheduled time of departure; or
(ii) they are informed of the cancellation between two weeks and seven days before the scheduled time of departure and are offered re-routing, allowing them to depart no more than two hours before the scheduled time of departure and to reach their final destination less than four hours after the scheduled time of arrival; or
(iii) they are informed of the cancellation less than seven days before the scheduled time of departure and are offered re-routing, allowing them to depart no more than one hour before the scheduled time of departure and to reach their final destination less than two hours after the scheduled time of arrival.
Which is pretty much what Alitalia say in their T&Cs

As I see it for a flight in April which is when this was the OP is not covered by the regulation so is not entitled to compensation or re-routing.

The only entitlement to re-routing is is the flight is cancelled less that 2 weeks prior to departure

Ich, the bold bit in your post only applies to the right to compensation, not re-routing.

If they cancel your flight you have a right to re-routing.

funny, they inform you this cancellation by email only, and waiting for the passengers to response . what if you did not get that email and just turn up at the airport

If they cannot offer the service , do not bother selling the fare at first place. No good took the money and then cancel it 4 months after, it is a good way of borrowing money without paying interests though.

This regulation is 8 years old this month, funny how it hasn't happened.

Ive spoken to 3 different people and have stated that legally, we are entitled to be re routed. They are saying that their company cant get ys there all the way abd so for part if the journey, we would have to use for eg KLM..and so this needs to be authorised. Originally I was told this would take max 5 hours, now Im being told Monday. They dont seem to appreciate that we need an answer as apparently, theres no urgency as my flight isnt tomorrow (!)
