Suze - I'm sure this will all work out in the long run :) Do please come back to the thread in the future with updates (good and bad!), for the benefit of other worried parents who WILL go through similar scenarios.

Best wishes to you and your son.

Thanks Bennifred. Of course I will.

He did spend some time browsing the WWOOF UK site yesterday and copied a few host profiles that interested him to show me.

It could just be a ploy to make me think he is actually doing something positive and keep me off his case. I would not actually say that at this stage but will wait a couple of weeks and see how far he takes it.

I agree but what does puting it right mean? His chances of getting another job are next to none now and I don't see researching "how to forage for food" is much of an attempt either.
Fair enough, give him the basics, food, heat, water, the rest will be up to him. putting it right means, he finds employment, anywhere and can fund his own lifestyle, if that means cleaning toilets or working in McDonald's, then so be it.

Just thought I would mention a son's friend did something like this- gave up on college, ended up working part time in Pizza Hut,had a great laugh with the other youngsters there, realised he really enjoyed it and has since embarked on catering/hotel management course. FWIW he was a very keen online gamer but found the real life cameraderie more attractive. Sometimes it is just a matter of finding the right direction and then it all takes care of itself. The key must be in working out exactly what it is he is searching for- outdoors, quiet, autonomy, escape from XBox. Another family member was mid twenties before accidentally finding her forte-credit control- when temporarily covering for someone off sick- she now runs the department. Not everyone's cup of tea but she is in her element and none of us expected her to be so good at demanding money! DH switched career path mid twenties with a patch of doldrums inbetween. Years ago a colleague switched from being a lawyer to a landscaper (late 20s) and was clearly much happier in his new role. Another (mid 20s) gave up a solicitors job to take a shot at a career in music. Not everyone follows a straight path- but the important thing is to get out of the house and try a few new things to see what works as all life experience is good experience. Good luck- this will be me in a couple of years with DS!

I used that in Oz, and I also did wwoofing.

Stayed with a right weirdo in Oz doing that :rotfl: but also a really lovely family, so much so we went back for a second visit.

Wwoofing was hard work but met amazing people.

Forage for food? Im imagining him turning into that guy they made a tv show about who kept roadkill in a chest freezer - a load of squashed rabbits, badgers etc!

Maybe you should suggest he starts to cook his own meals from what he has 'foraged' and see how he gets on with that - whilst hes living in a house all paid for!
